  • Patiently, Lake Zurich stops Glenbrook North Nov 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Just maybe the Lake Zurich fans were a little unsettled. After all, their favored Bears girls volleyball team was one set away from seeing their season end in the Conant sectional semifinals. Clearly, though, there was no panic on the Lake Zurich bench. This tested team of 34 wins had played teh same Glenbrook North team a few weeks back, and had beaten the Spartans in three sets that time. That pattern repeated itself Tuesday, as the Bears rallied for a 24-26, 25-17, 25-19 victory. Lake Zurich (34-4) will play Stevenson for the sectional title Thursday night at Conant after the Patriots eliminated Carmel in a two-set decision in the later semifinal at Conant.

  • Persistence serves Vogt, Libertyville May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
The Libertyville threat looked likely to pay off handsomely. The Wildcats trailed Glenbrook North 6-3 in the fifth inning on Saturday, with the championship of the Class 4A Lake Zurich regional on the line. The sacks were loaded for first baseman Matt Vogt, and he positively creamed one. It seemed destined to clear the bases. Until, that is, until Glenbrook North right fielder Paul Brandeisky positively robbed Vogt of extra bases with a nice catch. Vogt got another chance, though. There were five outs left in Libertyville’s season when he came to the plate in the sixth. This time, the senior kept the ball lower, and it paid off with a run-scoring double. Libertyville (24-11) stunned Glenbrook North with a 4-spot in the sixth. The Wildcats had a strong relief effort from winner Mitch Townsend and beat the Spartans 7-6.

Hersey hangs on, and moves on May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
It was nervous time for regional host Hersey at Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. In the deciding game of the regional final Wednesday, the Huskies had run out to an virtually insurmountable 22-12 lead in their quest for a big upset victory over state-ranked Glenbrook North. Then sixth-seeded Hersey watched almost helplessly as the Spartans staged an impossible rally, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to close the gap to 24-23. And with the large crowd on its feet in a fever pitch, and North poised to tie the match, junior Mike Fuerst put down one of the biggest kills in the storied history of the Hersey program. The 6-foot-7 middle blocker's final spike, his 10th kill of the match, completed a 25-23, 18-25, 25-23 win over a team that was runner-up in state last season and ranked No. 1 earlier this year.
