Hersey hangs on, and moves on May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
It was nervous time for regional host Hersey at Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. In the deciding game of the regional final Wednesday, the Huskies had run out to an virtually insurmountable 22-12 lead in their quest for a big upset victory over state-ranked Glenbrook North. Then sixth-seeded Hersey watched almost helplessly as the Spartans staged an impossible rally, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to close the gap to 24-23. And with the large crowd on its feet in a fever pitch, and North poised to tie the match, junior Mike Fuerst put down one of the biggest kills in the storied history of the Hersey program. The 6-foot-7 middle blocker's final spike, his 10th kill of the match, completed a 25-23, 18-25, 25-23 win over a team that was runner-up in state last season and ranked No. 1 earlier this year.

Lin's sparkling performance sent him to his second consecutive appearance in the state tournament. Galvin, a freshman at Rolling Meadows, earned his first state experience. The host Spartans accrued 17 points to win the team trophy, outscoring Glenbrook South (11), Schaumburg (10) and MSL East champion Rolling Meadows (8).

DURHAM, N.C. — Duke is bringing back former basketball player Jon Scheyer as a special assistant. Coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Scheyer's hiring Monday. Scheyer, who starred in high school at Glenbrook North, was a captain on the Blue Devils' last national championship team in 2010. His hiring fills a hole that opened after longtime Duke assistant Chris Collins left to take over at Northwestern. Nate James was promoted from special assistant to replace Collins on the staff, and Scheyer was brought in to replace James.

Libertyville’s wild ride continues Mar 21, 2013 12:00 AM
The early part of the boys gymnastics season has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for Libertyville. The host Wildcats continued their "up and down" trend Thursday night with a pretty solid performance on their senior night, but it was not quite enough to pull off a victory over Glenbrook North. The Spartans got the job done without their full lineup intact as they came away with a 128.2 to 122.4 nonconference victory over Libertyville (0-5) to remain undefeated at 4-0.

Glenbard North snares 13th straight regional title Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Toughness matters in wrestling, which partly explains why host Glenbard North secured its 13th straight regional title Saturday and advanced 10 individuals to next week’s Class 3A sectional. Seven Panthers competed in championship matches Saturday afternoon. Six wrestled their way to individual titles, thereby lifting Glenbard North (222 points) to the team title ahead of Wheaton North (183.5) and St. Charles East (174.5). “I thought we wrestled pretty tough,” Glenbard North coach Mark Hahn said. “We wanted the whole team to contribute points and we needed everybody — even if they weren’t seeded as well — to score points and everybody did. We knew it would be really close with St. Charles (East) and Wheaton North. We knew it would be a battle and I thought we stepped up.”

All-around success for Stochl; Great start for Carmel Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Making another trip to the girls gymnastics state meet would be something special for Warren’s Becky Stochl next month at Palatine High School. Stochl reached the preliminaries last year on vault, and she’s well on her way to repeating the feat — and then some. Stochl started the state series by qualifying in all four events and the all-around Tuesday night at the Glenbrook North regional in Northbrook. Three-time defending state champion Carmel Catholic captured the regional championship with 144.85 and Warren was runner-up at 134.85. Carmel senior Lauren Feely flew to top honors in all four events and the all-around (38.325).

A dream finish for Stevenson Oct 30, 2012 12:00 AM
A longtime dream became reality Tuesday as Stevenson’s boys soccer program earned its first-ever trip into the final four. “It’s a dream — it’s always been a dream,” said Stevenson coach Mark Schartner, who is in his 25th year of coaching the Patriots. “You don’t play necessarily for this moment. You play every game the best you can. The chips fall your way and you get to keep playing. “This season is very enjoyable because of the length of it. But they all have been great.” Stevenson shut out Glenbrook North 2-0 in the Class 3A Glenbrook South supersectional in Glenview. The Patriots (19-3-1) next play Naperville Central (22-1) in the state semifinals, at 7 p.m. Friday at Lincoln-Way North in Frankfort.

Trap game: Prospect wins at Glenbrook N. Oct 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Pat Costello and Prospect trapped Glenbrook North in the opening round of the Class 7A playoffs in Northbrook. Costello, who plays offensive tackle, helped the No. 13-seeded Knights kick out the No. 4 Spartans 35-14. Prospect will host Wheaton North, a 41-13 winner over St. Charles East, next weekend in the second round. "I just run my feet and run right through them, " said Costello, who threw several key trap blocks in the second half to spring running back Jack Tuttle. "I just was staying with my technique. We say that they went to double ones, and that is when we knew we had to go right at them." Costello, along with Kevin Kern, Mike Houghton, Jackson Wrede and Carl Erbe helped Prospect roll up 260 yards on the ground, 171 of which came in the second half.
