  • Fox Lake man killed in motorcycle crash Jul 20, 2014 6:31 PM
    A 65-year-old Fox Lake man was killed Sunday morning after his motorcycle collided with a minivan in northern McHenry County, officials said. David Stoll was pronounced dead at 11:08 a.m. at Centegra Medical Center — McHenry, about 90 minutes after the crash at Route 173 and Winn Road in Spring Grove.

    A mosquito pool (or batch of mosquitoes) sampled July 8th in Deerfield has tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquito pool is the first confirmed indicator of the disease’s presence in Lake County in 2014. In 2013, five human cases, 2 birds, and 41 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus in the county.

  • Fox Lake officials may repeal grant for facade work Jul 15, 2014 5:30 AM
    An advisory committee is recommending Fox Lake officials repeal a June vote that gave a business owner and village trustee a pair of $4,000 grants in violation of the village’s revised facade improvement ordinance. Mayor Donny Schmit said the facade improvement committee recommended Trustee Ron Stochl is entitled to one, but not both grants. It will go before the village board for a vote July 22.

  • Fox Lake to review ‘mistake’ in $8,000 storefront facade grant Jul 12, 2014 8:00 AM
    Fox Lake officials said they may have mistakenly violated the village’s facade improvement ordinance that limits eligible business property owners to one storefront grant each fiscal year, by awarding two grants to an owner who also is a village trustee. “If it’s a mistake and he shouldn’t have received it, we can fix it,” Mayor Donny Schmit said. “We’ll do what’s right if he’s not entitled to it.”

    Not many young men learn how to throw a curveball from their moms. But that's exactly what Gloria “Tippy” Schweigerdt did with her son, Gordon. Schweigerdt had some experience on the mound — she pitched in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the early 1950s. And when it came time for father-son Little League games, Gloria Schweigerdt took the field with Gordon, too. Schweigerdt, 80, of Fox Lake, died Thursday after an illness.

    The Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at College of DuPage recently graduated 51 recruits representing 37 police agencies in Northern Illinois. The ceremony honored the recruits for completing 12 weeks – 480 hours – of basic law enforcement officer training which began this past spring.
