    Two deadly accidents within six months on Oakton Street near Elk Grove Village have caused some people to question whether safety measures couldn’t be installed. The fatal accidents — a 4-year-old boy hit by a semi-truck last July and a 66-year-old man struck by a car two weeks before Christmas — were in an area with a mobile home park on the north side and businesses on the south side. “They need a crosswalk out there,” said Mary Swieca, the wife of the second victim.

Niewiardowski has served as a precinct captain, deputy committeeman, communications chairman and on several committees. “My involvement in several different roles in this organization puts me in a great position to lead,” he said.

    Some of Elk Grove Village’s finest citizens will be recognized Friday night for their “exceptional character” displayed in a variety of service and charitable efforts. The fifth annual Celebration of Character, sponsored by the Community Character Coalition of Elk Grove, is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Elk Grove Pavilion, 1000 Wellington Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.

     
  • Former Wellington restaurant to be demolished Sep 25, 2013 6:17 PM
    Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 will demolish the former Wellington restaurant building in Arlington Heights it acquired this summer, officials decided this week. Renovating the building would have been too costly, since parts of it aren't up to local codes, officials said. “It just became apparent that it would be too expensive to convert,” district spokeswoman Betsy Boswell said. “It had a lot of issues ... I don't think there was ever much chance that we would have reused the building.”

A second workshop, this one for Elk Grove Township and conducted by Dan Patlak of the Cook County Board of Review, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Elk Grove Township Office, 2400 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights.

    Chicago-based United Continental Holdings, which still has some operations in Elk Grove Township, aims to attract more travelers with live TV provided by Direct TV in 200 planes, possibly more than other airlines. And more planes are expected to offer the in-flight feature later this year, said United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson.
