    José Torres is stepping down as superintendent of Elgin Area School District U-46 to become the president of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. “It was a difficult decision to make,” Torres wrote in an email. “Serving you as superintendent the past six years has been one of the most rewarding periods of my life.” Torres is expected to start at IMSA in September.

    The group proposing an Elgin charter school says it will appeal Elgin Area School District U-46's decision to deny its charter application with the state. “We're going to be working with the Illinois Network of Charter Schools and an attorney,” said Kerry Kelly, vice president of the Elgin Charter School Initiative. “The INCS thinks we have a strong chance on appeal. We've looked at some case law. I think we have a very strong case.”

    The Elgin Charter School Initiative will make a final push Monday to convince the Elgin Area School District U-46 school board to accept its charter proposal. Representatives of the charter design team and the group’s supporters will be at Monday night’s school board meeting for the official vote on the proposal. U-46’s charter school evaluation committee last month recommended denial of the proposal to create a new math and science elementary charter school in Elgin.

The emotions are very real.” The four-hour training was the largest ever conducted by Elgin police.

    Teenagers and adults in the Batavia, Elgin and St. Charles areas are urged to put on their dancing shoes for a good cause Friday. The Teen Writers and Artists Project will host the “T-WAAP Sock Hop” dance marathon, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Marquee Youth Stage in the lower level of The Quad/Charlestowne Mall, 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles. “This is our first one,” said Executive Director Diana Zwinak, adding that organizers hope to raise $5,000, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. “We can sustain our programming for the next year on that.”

    Round Lake Middle School music teacher Javier Diaz’s enthusiasm for choir has filtered to the pupils there. Since he was hired for the 2010-11 academic year, Diaz has taken the program from eight to about 90 students. There also are two choir classes part of the daily curriculum rather than a single after-school group. “I think the kids feed off my passion for the music,” said Diaz, 34, of Lake in the Hills.

    Bilingual and special education teachers are in demand at Elgin Area School District U-46. The state’s second-largest school district with more than 40,000 students is hosting a job fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The district specifically is seeking English Language Learner-certified bilingual teachers for prekindergarten and kindergarten through 12th grades, as well as bilingual special education teachers.
