Joey Mauk and Conant accomplished what they came for Friday at the 61st annual boys gymnastics state finals at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort. Conant avoided some early trouble to claim a second-place trophy, scoring a 155.70 to finish behind Wheaton co-op's 161.65. Mauk put together his best all-around performance of the year to finish third with a career-best 54.70.

  • St. Edward opens postseason on a mission May 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The St. Edward girls soccer team is well aware of what happened in last year's postseason. After a 1-0 loss to Lisle in a Class 1A sectional final that prevented the Green Wave a state final appearance, they would like some redemption this spring. But when the Green Wave broke out of coach Tim Brieger's huddle prior to the start of the Class 1A regional semifinal at Westminster Christian on Tuesday and formed another huddle of their own, you could tell they meant business after posing the notion of setting the tone early and getting a 7-goal win in the process. Consider the tone set after the top-seeded Green Wave had 7 different goal scorers on 24 shots en route to an 8-0 win over No. 4 Elgin Academy in Elgin.

  • Elgin’s Khan, South Elgin shine at Elgin quad Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
The boys tennis team at Elgin High School survived one storm surge this week but Saturday, the Storm surge that was South Elgin was just unavoidable. A creek less than 30 yards away helped flood Elgin’s courts after the midweek rains. But the Maroons were out early Saturday morning with roll driers frantically getting their courts ready after the water receded. Elgin got the courts ready in time, but it set the stage for South Elgin to win an Elgin-themed quad with 13 victories in total. Host Elgin compiled 11, Larkin came in third with and Elgin Academy came away with a single victory.

  • St. Edward will go for Brieger’s 200th Saturday Apr 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Career win No. 200 will have to wait another day for St. Edward girls soccer coach Tim Brieger. The only coach in Green Wave girls soccer history needed just 2 wins on Friday to reach the milestone but after a scoreless tie against Streamwood and a 3-0 win over Genoa-Kingston in the Green Wave Invitational at Greg True Field, Brieger found himself stuck on 199. There's a chance for Brieger to earn the milestone at some point Saturday, but one person who was proud to prevent it from happening was Brieger's good friend, Streamwood coach Matt Polovin.

  • FVC Valley race promises to be a thriller Apr 11, 2013 12:00 AM
The seven teams of the Fox Valley Conference’s Valley Division own a 51-12 combined record this spring. Next week they begin facing each other in a title chase that promises to be among the state’s fiercest. The FVC Valley is as deep as it is competitive. Not only have member schools gone 10-3 against the Mid-Suburban League and 7-1 against the North Suburban Conference, all seven boast winning records through Thursday: Huntley (9-0), Crystal Lake South (6-0), Jacobs (8-1), Cary-Grove (9-2), Dundee-Crown (4-2), Prairie Ridge (8-3) and McHenry (7-4).

  • Westminster Christian’s next challenge: Mooseheart Feb 19, 2013 12:00 AM
Usually Westminster Christian boys basketball coach Bruce Firchau can be as loud as anyone in a high school gym. But Tuesday night he was just a tad bit too quiet. It wasn’t because his No. 3 seed Warriors raced out to a 28-point halftime lead en route to a 61-22 victory over No. 6 seed Elgin Academy in a Class 1A Westminster Christian regional semifinal in Elgin. Firchau’s been so busy of late that he came down with a case of laryngitis. Luckily for the Warrors, Will Woodhouse and Dillon Rejman each poured in 14 points each to save their coach’s vocal chords for one night, as the Warriors now have the daunting task of playing No. 2 seed Mooseheart tonight at 7:30 p.m. in one semfinal. Mooseheart defeated No. 7 Faith Lutheran 74-40 earlier in the evening and has beaten Westminster (17-12) by a combined-54 points in two meetings this season.
