    This Memorial Day will take on a deeper meaning for Christian Sanchez, a 13-year-old boy from Carpentersville whose great-uncle, Army First Lt. Ronald Wolter, was killed in action during the Vietnam War. Christian recently visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall on a class trip to Washington D.C., found his great uncle's name and, at his mother's and grandmother's request, made four etchings of his name.

    Twenty-nine suburban park districts spent more than $200,000 combined to pay for hotels, meals, registration and other costs for a weekend conference in January in Chicago, an analysis of invoices showed. Arlington Heights parks spent the most -- $18,664 for 32 people -- while Oakbrook Terrace spent the most per person, at $921.

    A new report created by the League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area says the Kane County Forest Preserve District was dishonest in its handling of potential gravel mining at the Brunner Forest Preserve. Even discussing the creation of a mining operation goes against the very mission of the district, the report states. Now the district has a trust problem that has the league calling for separation of the district from the county board. But District President John Hoscheit said gravel mining isnt going to happen; its a dead issue, and anyone still fixated on gravel mining probably has an alternate agenda, such as not liking the Longmeadow Parkway project.

Fitness plans on building a gym in the space that was once home to Toys R Us near Spring Hill Mall, said Cathleen Tymoszenko, the village’s community development director.
