This Memorial Day will take on a deeper meaning for Christian Sanchez, a 13-year-old boy from Carpentersville whose great-uncle, Army First Lt. Ronald Wolter, was killed in action during the Vietnam War. Christian recently visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall on a class trip to Washington D.C., found his great uncle's name and, at his mother's and grandmother's request, made four etchings of his name.

College students — you should have listened to your parents when they told you last month to start looking for the summer outside jobs with Dundee Township villages. Now, they are nearly gone. Only Carpentersville and East Dundee may have a handful of jobs open in their public works departments. West Dundee and the Dundee Township Park District have filled theirs for the season.

Twenty-nine suburban park districts spent more than $200,000 combined to pay for hotels, meals, registration and other costs for a weekend conference in January in Chicago, an analysis of invoices showed. Arlington Heights parks spent the most -- $18,664 for 32 people -- while Oakbrook Terrace spent the most per person, at $921.

Kane forest preserve dishonest about gravel mining, report says May 4, 2012 12:00 AM
A new report created by the League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area says the Kane County Forest Preserve District was dishonest in its handling of potential gravel mining at the Brunner Forest Preserve. Even discussing the creation of a mining operation goes against the very mission of the district, the report states. Now the district has a trust problem that has the league calling for separation of the district from the county board. But District President John Hoscheit said gravel mining isnt going to happen; its a dead issue, and anyone still fixated on gravel mining probably has an alternate agenda, such as not liking the Longmeadow Parkway project.

The group may not have the experience of its predecessors or the number of volunteers as in past years, but the volunteer income tax-preparing contingent for area senior citizens is open for business at the Dundee Township Public Library. Preparers took their seats earlier this month and plan to stay in them every Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon until April 15.
