    All seven classrooms that make up the fifth-grade at West Oak Middle School in Mundelein learned about reporting, writing and storytelling in a half-day Writer's Conference developed by fifth-grade teacher Katherine Crawford. The annual event includes advance sessions that teach interviewing and reporting tips in addition to feature writing and writing presentation.

    It's been chick hatching time in first-grade classrooms at Fairhaven School in Mundelein, with the most recent batch of little ones recently breaking through their shells. Teachers at Fairhaven have been hatching chicks the past 16 years as part of the "chick project," which coincides with the science curriculum at the Diamond Lake District 76 school.

Petrella, superintendent of the Gateway School district covering an area about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh, has been selected from more than 40 applicants to lead the Mundelein-based district beginning July 1.
