    As the old saying goes, it’s win or go home time. The Class 4A IHSA girls basketball state tournament series gets under way Monday night around the state, and teams in the Fox Valley area won’t be experiencing anything very new when they begin regional play. All area Class 4A teams except Bartlett have been assigned to the Crystal Lake South sectional complex. Regionals will be played at Jacobs, Cary-Grove, Rockford Jefferson and Hononegah.

    Jacobs freshman center Cam Krutwig will have better games. But with the game in doubt, Krutwig came up big. Krutwig’s putback of a missed shot attempt by Chris Orange with 6.9 seconds remaining tied the game at 49. Fouled on the play, Krutwig connected on the ensuing free throw which was the eventual game-winner. A desperation shot by Crystal Lake South’s Colin Wagner clanged off the backboard and the Golden Eagles survived with a 50-49 win over the Gators in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action in Algonquin Friday night.

    The milestones came in triplicate Tuesday night at Huntley. At the top of the list came the Red Raiders’ girls basketball team coming from behind to beat Crystal Lake South 61-50 on Senior Night to complete an undefeated Fox Valley Conference Valley Division season, Huntley’s first FVC title in girls basketball. Add to it the accomplishments of Huntley sophomore Ali Andrews and Crystal Lake South senior Sara Mickow and you had yourself one of those banner nights.

    Dundee-Crown took Crystal Lake South’s best shot, got off the canvas and then produced a hard-fought victory. Holding off the Gators’ valiant second half rally, the visiting Chargers were able to post a 57-50 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball win in Crystal Lake Tuesday night.

    UEC, FVC crossovers take center stage this weekFeb 10, 2014 12:00 AM
    As the regular season comes into the home stretch this week for Class 3A and Class 4A girls basketball teams, crossover matchups in the Upstate Eight and Fox Valley conferences will take center stage later in the week. Over the past couple of years, some coaches in each conference have expressed how they’d prefer to play an out-of-conference school in this final regular-season game but for now the crossovers remain.

  • Huntley clinches FVC Valley title outright Feb 8, 2014 12:00 AM
    The Huntley girls basketball team clinched the outright championship of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division Saturday with a 69-34 win over Jacobs in Algonquin. The title is Huntley’s first in girls basketball in the FVC. The Red Raiders last won a conference crown in 2002-03, their last year of competition in the Big Northern Conference.

    For a while, it looked as if the expected race for the big trophy would not materialize between favored Deerfield and challengers Barrington, Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake South and host McHenry. As it turned out, Lake Zurich which was just a click behind Deerfield nearly two hours into the Class 3A regional. But a funny thing happened on the way to the round of wrestleback semifinals — so funny that Barrington coach Ken Hoving finally managed a small grin when he saw his club pull within reach of Deerfield, trailing just 119-113 in advance of the medal round. Later, after celebrating individual titles from Matt Stathakis (103, 29-3) and Matt Conrad (132, 29-10) and saying thank you to his FVC coaching counterparts for their help along the way, Hoving broke into a broad smile midway through the finals when the scoreboard flashed his Broncos were now atop the leaderboard at 146.0-136.5. Five weights later, and after a trio of second-place finishes, the Broncos got one last bit of help at 195 as Ryan Grannemann of McHenry defeated Christo Moran of Deerfield 4-1, helping get the Broncos a fourth straight regional championship.

  • South Elgin, Streamwood on collision course again Feb 7, 2014 12:00 AM
    If seeds hold, Fox Valley area girls basketball fans could be in for a treat come regional final Thursday in Class 3A and Class 4A. The IHSA released pairings for the postseason on Friday and in Class 4A, South Elgin and Streamwood could meet for the third straight year in a regional final, this time at Jacobs. The Sabres beat South Elgin last year before advancing to the sectional finals and falling to Huntley. In 2012, South Elgin beat Streamwood in the regional final before losing to Cary-Grove in the sectional semifinals.

    Elgin-area superfan Dave St. John will be recognized at halftime of Friday night’s boys basketball game between Larkin and Elgin for his unwavering support of the athletic programs of each high school. St. John, 77, has deep ties to both schools. He is a 1954 graduate of Elgin High, where he met his wife, Nila (Class of ‘56). The couple’s five sons later attended Larkin. Three played sports. St. John soon became a fixture at Larkin sporting events. He even worked the chains for Royals home football games for 10 years. “That’s when I got hooked,” he said.

    There were few surprises Thursday when the IHSA released the seeds for the upcoming Class 3A and Class 4A girls basketball postseason. In Class 4A, all Fox Valley area teams feed into the Judson University supersectional, which will be hosted by Westminster Christian. Sectional winners from Addison Trail and Crystal Lake South will meet in that Elite Eight game.

    This year’s IHSA girls’ bowling state series features a new twist. A regional level of competition has been added where the top 4 teams in each regional and the top 10 individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the sectional round. Regionals get underway Saturday morning. District 300 neighbors Jacobs and Dundee-Crown are two Fox Valley-area teams looking to carry over regular-season success into the new postseason format.

    Losing two tough games to Crystal Lake South this season, Dundee-Crown was hoping to turn the tables on the Gators Monday night. Mission accomplished. Opening up a 13-point lead in the third quarter, the Chargers held off a valiant fourth quarter really by South in defeating the Gators 50-48 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball action in Carpentersville.

    Crystal Lake South happy with FVC runner-up finish Feb 1, 2014 12:00 AM
    Sure, Crystal Lake South coach Ross Ryan would like to have hoisted the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament championship trophy Saturday at McHenry High School. But Ryan was happy with his team’s second place conference finish. Wrestling without 195-pounder Brian Pence, the Gators (163 ½ points) were runner-up to Crystal Lake Central, which claimed top honors with 199 points. Cary-Grove was third a half point behind South with 163 points.

    Plenty of suburban high schools have made the finals of the IHSA state competitive dance championships, which will be held Saturday in Bloomington. Ninety teams qualified to go downstate, but now only 30 remain.
