  • Huntley nails down FVC Valley title May 22, 2014 9:28 PM
    It didn’t take the Huntley baseball team long to wrap up the outright title in the Fox Valley Conference on Thursday. Playing Crystal Lake South in the completion of a game suspended on Tuesday in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score tied 3-3, Huntley scored twice in the sixth on a walk and 3 straight hits and Nick Constantino retired the Gators in order in the seventh to finish a 5-3 victory. The win secured Huntley’s first outright title in the Fox Valley Conference’s Valley Division. The Red Raiders shared the FVC Valley title in 2010 and 2013.

This weekend’s girls state track and field finals at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston features no shortage of local participants. At the forefront of the pack are representatives from the successful Hampshire and Cary-Grove teams.

    Crystal Lake South was offensive during Wednesday night’s Class 3A Huntley regional semifinal girls soccer game against Dundee-Crown. In a good way. Outshooting the third-seeded Chargers 23-8, the second-seeded Gators powered their way to a 3-0 win.

    Grayslake North 2, Hampshire 0: The Whip-Purs were unable to secure the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division title outright as they fell to Grayslake North, leaving them in a first-place tie with Grayslake Central. Sara Finn, Aly Snider and Becca Hurst had the only hits in the loss for Hampshire (19-12, 10-2). Haley Widmayer (17-10) didn’t allow an earned run, gave up just 4 hits and had 8 strikeouts with 3 walks in suffering the loss.

    Kallash Panchapakesan won the No. 1 singles championship and Kendrick Chong finished second at No. 2 singles Tuesday to lead Jacobs to a second-place finish at the Fox Valley Conference boys tennis tournament.

    Focused. Chip on its shoulder. However you want to describe Huntley’s mood, the Red Raiders’ girls soccer team was certainly ready for the postseason. Scoring 5 first-half goals, the top-seeded Red Raiders blitzed fourth-seeded Jacobs 5-0 in semifinal action of the Class 3A Huntley regional Tuesday night.

    Huntley, Cary-Grove split: After taking a 3-1 loss to start the day thanks to a rain-shortened makeup, the Red Raiders (17-14, 7-5) rebounded and won 6-2 to close out the day in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action.

    Ryan Sargent tossed a 5-hitter with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts, and Tim Hubner, Matt Kozlak and Brenden Heiss each drove in runs as the Jacobs baseball team defeated Cary-Grove 3-1 on Monday. The victory kept Jacobs (20-11, 13-4), which has never won a title in the Fox Valley Conference, tied for first place in the Valley Division with Huntley with 2 games remaining.

  • Crystal Lake South making noise at the right time May 17, 2014 7:07 PM
    The Crystal Lake South baseball team is heating up at the right time. Due to a slow start at the plate this season, the two-time defending co-champion Gators find themselves eliminated from contention in the Valley Division of the Fox Valley Conference, 4 games back with 3 games to play. However, with Saturday’s 4-1 victory at Cary-Grove, CL South finished a 2-game series sweep and completed a 5-0 week, feats bound to get the attention of the other four teams assigned to the Class 4A CL South regional in two weeks.

     
  • Grayslake North’s Booker streaks past FVC field May 16, 2014 11:13 PM
    If you blinked you missed Grayslake North standout sprinter Titus Booker. Booker sprinted past the field at Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference meet held at Crystal Lake Central, winning the 100 meters in 11.06 and the 200 in a clocking of 22.20. “I just ran with my heart tonight and it worked out very well,” said the talented Knights junior. “I knew it would be good competition tonight so I trained hard. I feel very confident going into the sectionals next week.” McHenry, led by junior distance standout Jesse Reiser, claimed the conference championship with a score of 103.50.

     
  • McLean powers Crystal Lake South past Huntley May 16, 2014 10:58 PM
    Sam McLean struck out in her first at-bat and made an error late in the game that cost her Gators a run. The senior made up for it in a big way, however, by driving in 5 runs and powering Crystal Lake South’s softball team to a 9-2 win over Huntley at The Ballpark in Rosemont Friday night.

  • Little change to Fox Valley postseason May 16, 2014 9:39 PM
    New location, same teams. The Class 4A baseball sectional held last season at Huntley shifts to McHenry this year, but little else has changed. Three of the four regionals within the sectional complex contain the same five teams and the fourth has only one lineup alteration, according to pairings released this week.

  • Controlling out of control games no easy task for any coach May 14, 2014 8:26 PM
    What’s a coach to do? Your team is ahead of the opponent, say, 12-0 after two innings. You know if your team keeps playing it straight at it might be 20-0, or worse, by the time the fifth inning rolls around and the slaughter rule takes effect. So what’s a coach to do? Some will say tough, that’s the way it is, and do nothing except let the game play out. Others will have runners leave early, or bunt back to the pitcher, or have their hitters intentionally swing at bad pitches — anything to get it over quicker and not embarrass the other team.

    Michigan recruit Ryan Nutof had it going Wednesday afternoon, with his arm and his bat. The South Elgin senior pitched a complete-game 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts and drove in the game’s only run in the top of the eighth inning as the Storm escaped Metea Valley with a 1-0 Upstate Eight Valley win.
