  • St. Edward’s Scully advances to sectional Oct 8, 2014 9:33 PM
Ryann Scully will have a story to tell her kids and grandkids about one hole she played during the Class A Genoa-Kingston girls golf regional at The Oak Club Wednesday. What Scully can do, though, is tell a story in which she had an 18 — yes, an 18 — on a hole and still qualified for the sectional. “On the ninth hole I got into the sand by the green in two (shots),” Scully said, “and it was all downhill from there. It took me 12 shots to get out of that sand.”

  • Crystal Lake South upends Cary-Grove Oct 8, 2014 12:41 AM
Tuesday’s match against visiting Cary-Grove was a must-win for the Crystal Lake South girls volleyball team in its quest for a division three-peat. CL South lost to the Trojans in Cary in straight sets on Sept. 11 in the first meeting between the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division rivals, but the Gators returned the favor on their Senior Night. Powered by a defense that dug up many of Cary-Grove’s best swings and blocked several others, the Gators turned defense into offense and prevailed 25-19, 25-23.

  • Crystal Lake South heats up to win Harland Oct 4, 2014 6:13 PM
With temperatures hovering at barely 40 degrees and a steady rain at race time, the 41st Annual Pat Harland Invitational was definitely going to be a struggle for area girls cross country runners Saturday morning. But despite the dismal running conditions on the 3-mile Fox River State Park course, Crystal Lake South showed it had the power to win the meet hosted by Antioch. The Gators finished with 56 points, well ahead of Marengo’s 91.

  • Crystal Lake Central edges Warren for Harland title Oct 4, 2014 6:09 PM
It is always fun to be challenged on a 3-mile course, but Saturday’s weather conditions were probably a little bit too much for even the most ardent boys cross country runners in the Pat Harland Invitational. Warren pushed Crystal Lake Central to the finish on the hilly 3-mile Fox River State Park course. But the Blue Devils had to settle for second place to the Tigers by a final score of 52-66 in the meet hosted by Antioch.

  • Crystal Lake South’s ground game stops Dundee-Crown Oct 3, 2014 11:30 PM
Crystal Lake South’s offensive attack isn’t pretty or fancy. But it is effective. Led by a 247-yard 3-touchdown effort by senior running back Kyle Bartusch, the Gators pounded out 351 yards on the ground in a 31-13 win over Dundee-Crown in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division contest in Carpentersville Friday night.

  • Huntley claims 3rd FVC title in 4 years Oct 2, 2014 7:08 PM
After finishing second to Jacobs in last year’s Fox Valley Conference boys golf tournament, Huntley coach Jim Rolando was looking for his team to climb that one step higher in this year’s meet. The Red Raiders got the job done. Led by a 73 from Jake Grabner and a 75 from Trent Craig, Huntley placed first with a score of 312 at Thursday’s FVC meet hosted by McHenry and held at Oak Grove Golf Course.

  • Cary-Grove senior Luloff wins FVC crown Oct 1, 2014 7:12 PM
Cary-Grove senior Larissa Luloff admitted she put a lot of pressure on herself to win Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference girls golf tournament at Crystal Woods. “I really wanted to win individually,” Luloff said. “I put that pressure on myself and I probably shouldn’t have.” But Luloff beat the pressure, and the golf course, to shoot a 5-over par 77 and come away with the individual title that also led her Crystal Lake co-op team to the FVC team championship.

  • Crystal Lake South upends Cary-Grove Sep 30, 2014 9:21 PM
Crystal Lake South grabbed control of the wheel right from the outset in a key showdown at Cary-Grove on Tuesday and after a 3-1 win the Gators find themselves in the driver’s seat of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys soccer race. The loss snapped the Trojans’ 11-game win streak.

  • Taylor Invite turns out all right for CL South Sep 27, 2014 5:04 PM
It may not be a regular occurrence, but there have been plenty of instances of runners going the wrong way in boys cross country meets over the years. That was the case Saturday morning at the 16th Annual James “J.T.” Taylor Invite, as two of the front-runners went off course for awhile on the 3-mile Camp Henry Horner course. When all was said and done it didn’t really make a difference in the final team standings as Crystal Lake South still won the championship of the 16-team meet hosted by Grant with 56 points.

  • Breakaway win for Van Vlierbergen in Bartlett Sep 27, 2014 7:00 PM
Jacobs senior Lauren Van Vlierbergen broke away from the pack early in Bartlett’s 13th annual Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invitational at Sunrise Park on Saturday morning. Schaumburg’s top five runners were packed in at the end of the 3-mile race. The methods led to familiar results as Van Vlierbergen took individual honors by more than 30 seconds for the second straight year. And Schaumburg continued its team dominance of the 14-team meet, with senior Caroline Kurdej leading its five scoring runners to finishes in the top 15 as it beat St. Charles North 47-78.

  • Crystal Lake South dominates McHenry Sep 26, 2014 11:32 PM
Crystal Lake South senior Alex Gardeck predicted a big return after he was forced to sit out last week’s game because of a pinhole tear in his trachea. “Today in study hall I told him (tailback Corey Sheehan) you are going for 200-plus yards,” Gardeck said, “and I told him (fullback Kyle Bartusch) you are going to have a big game.” Gardeck was right in the middle of leading Sheehan and Bartusch to career nights as he returned to his center spot Friday night at McCracken Field in McHenry. Sheehan rushed for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns and Bartusch ran for 160 and two scores as the Gators powered their way to a 41-28 victory in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division football opener for both teams.
