  • Crystal Lake South comes back to beat Prairie Ridge Mar 3, 2015 11:07 PM
After three quarters of less than stellar basketball, Crystal Lake South’s chances of beating District 155 rival Prairie Ridge for a third time this season seemed bleak. Shooting 7 of 30 from the field for 23 percent through 24 minutes, the second-seeded Gators trailed PR 32-22 heading into the fourth quarter. South saved its best for last. Spearheaded by a 17 -0 run, the Gators connected on all 6 shots they took in the final quarter including 4 of 4 from 3-point range in posting a 44-41 win over the stunned Wolves in Huntley Class 4A regional semifinal boys basketball action Tuesday night.

  • Renkosik’s 3 lifts Huntley past Crystal Lake S. Feb 23, 2015 11:15 PM
As expected, Ali Andrews made most of the shots for Huntley, but nobody made a bigger shot than Paige Renkosik. The Red Raiders’ junior guard knocked down a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to put Huntley ahead 42-40, and the Raiders hung on to beat Crystal Lake South, 44-40, in the semifinals of the Class 4A Rockford Guilford girls basketball sectional semifinals Monday night.

  • Hampshire’s Barnett announces coaching retirement Feb 23, 2015 9:32 PM
Hampshire boys basketball coach Bob Barnett announced his retirement from coaching Monday afternoon, effective at the end of the season. Barnett, 54, said his decision is not directly related to his health, though he suffered two heart attacks on Nov. 20, 2012. He missed a game last week due to illness.

  • Cullen, Barone shine with championships Feb 21, 2015 11:38 PM
Hail to the champions! Knowing that time was running out on their high school careers, and the chances of lifting a big trophy were down to just one more wrestling match, Michael Cullen and Eric Barone turned in the performance of their prep lives Saturday night and earned the first state titles of their careers at State Farm Arena.

  • Don’t expect Huntley to be looking ahead Feb 22, 2015 8:24 PM
Mark Smith, Tom Dineen and Randy Weibel could give Steve Raethz some good advice right now, not that the veteran Huntley girls basketball coach needs it. Take nothing for granted. Smith’s Burlington Central team, Dineen’s Stevenson squad and Weibel’s Hononegah team, all state-ranked girls basketball teams, were upset Friday night in regional finals. While that didn’t happen to Raethz and his Huntley squad, the Red Raiders know all too well the end of the season is a loss away.

  • Crystal Lake South handles Cary-Grove Feb 20, 2015 11:21 PM
Crystal Lake South could not have pictured a more perfect start as it scored the first 16 points against Fox Valley Conference rival Cary-Grove-Grove in Friday night’s Class 4A Grant girls basketball regional championship game. The outcome was not so clear when Cary-Grove got within 2 points with less than 5 ½ minutes to play. But the Gators, the top seed in the regional, regained their focus to get the photo finish they wanted in a 43-34 victory in Fox Lake.

  • State title shot for Cary-Grove’s Cullen Feb 20, 2015 11:41 PM
Michael Cullen and Eric Barone will both be competing for a state wrestling title Saturday night. The dynamic duo from the Fox Valley Conference each produced yet another masterful performance on Friday. Cullen made it through to his first championship match after three previous trips here yielded three state medals while Barone’s victory over Phyllip DeLoach (39-1) sets up a potentially thrilling 145-pound final with No. 1 Larry Early III (Oak Park-River Forest), who defeated Barone a few weeks ago 3-2.

  • Cary-Grove’s Gomez impressive at state Feb 19, 2015 10:05 PM
While tournament favorites Michael Cullen, Eric Barone and Christian Brunner dominated their first-day tournament opponents, the story at the IHSA Class 3A individual state wrestling tournament Thursday still has to be of Gomez, the Cary-Grove senior. The Trojans’ heavyweight did some wrecking business of his own at State Farm Arena, and in doing so has now set up a date with Brian Ditchman (40-3) of Lincoln-Way Central) in one of several key quarterfinal bouts to take place Friday at 11 a.m.

  • Cary-Grove bounces Prairie Ridge Feb 18, 2015 11:17 PM
It was uncomfortably quiet for a few minutes in the field house at Grant on Wednesday night. All Cary-Grove guard Katie Barker could do was sympathize, and empathize. There on the floor, with less than two minutes left in a Class 4A regional semifinal game, sat Prairie Ridge guard Kelly Klendworth. She wasn’t moving, and she was in pain, holding her knee.

  • Cary-Grove claims 8th straight FVC title Feb 14, 2015 11:40 PM
Death, taxes and Cary-Grove winning Fox Valley Conference boys swimming championships. All these seem to be certainties. For the eighth consecutive season, Cary-Grove, which also has swimmers from District 155 schools Crystal Lake South, Prairie Ridge and Crystal Lake Central, claimed the FVC title Saturday at Woodstock North. Scoring 356 points, the Trojans easily defeated second place McHenry, which scored 285 points.

  • Cary-Grove’s Cullen a sectional champ again Feb 14, 2015 10:55 PM
You would be hard pressed to find a better two-day performance at the Barrington wrestling sectional than the one Michael Cullen turned in. With a characteristic flourish, Cullen did it again. The Cary-Grove senior left the competition in his wake on the way to a third sectional title in four years to send the three-time state medalist into next weekend’s Class 3A state tournament as one of the favorites at 120 pounds when things begin in Champaign on Thursday.

  • Jacobs clinches share of FVC Valley crown Feb 15, 2015 1:30 AM
Funny what a year of experience can mean. The last time the Jacobs boys basketball players ventured into The Swamp in January of 2014, they grabbed a 19-point, third-quarter lead only to see Crystal Lake South erupt for a 33-2 run that vaulted it to victory. Saturday offered a chance to turn the tables for the better-seasoned Golden Eagles. Trailing 7-1, Jacobs used a mix of full-court pressure and half-court traps to force 14 first-half turnovers that fueled a 27-0 run. The senior-heavy Golden Eagles cruised to a 61-38 win after leading 33-13 at the half.
