Hampshire putting it all together May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
In years past, while Hampshire's Patti Nihells, one of the longest-tenured area girls track coaches, may not have had the largest teams but she's always had talented individual athletes both on the track and in the field events. This year, Hampshire is enjoying the best of both worlds. The Whip-Purs are fresh off winning the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division team title in only their second year in the conference. Hampshire, which finished third overall in the 14-team FVC meet, will look to continue that season-long success at Friday's Class 2A Burlington Central sectional. At the sectional level, the top two place-finishers in each event and any individual or relay team equaling or surpassing the minimum state-qualifying standard in each event advance to the state finals in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University.

Cary-Grove, Hampshire claim FVC division crowns May 6, 2013 12:00 AM
On a record-breaking night at the Fox Valley Conference girls track and field meet at Grayslake Central, the overall winner sounded like a broken record. For the fifth straight season FVC Valley Division champion Cary-Grove finished as the overall champion in a 14-team meet scored separately by Valley and Fox Divisions. The Trojans scored well in the field events and overcame adversity on the track to amass 114 team points, edging Huntley (102) for the title. Hampshire (85 points) won the FVC Fox Division, marking its first FVC girls track and field title in only its second year as a conference member. Grayslake Central (70) finished second in the Fox Division, fourth overall.

Unexpected good pitching at core of Bartlett’s surge May 4, 2013 12:00 AM
The odds did not favor Bartlett having another strong softball season back in March. The Hawks had plenty of talent returning from their 2012 Class 4A state runner-up team, but they lost an all-state catcher to injury and they had about 6 innings of varsity pitching experience returning. But here it is May a year later and, yep, there's Bartlett surging again. The Hawks are 18-6 overall and 9-2 in the Upstate Eight Conference, currently a game ahead of the pack in the Valley Division.

McLean, Massie propel Crystal Lake South Apr 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Crystal Lake South softball coach Scott Busam was joking. Really, he was. Busam told Gators' junior Sam McLean before Monday's Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game at Cary-Grove to hit a home run. McLean is South's leadoff hitter and had never hit a home run in a high school softball game. "I told her Sam I really need you to hit a home run today'. But I was teasing her. Really, I was," Busam smiled. But like any good athlete, McLean did as her coach told her. She launched her first home run over the center field fence, a 2-run shot in the top of the fifth inning, and sophomore right-hander Hailee Massie fired a 2-hitter as the Gators beat Cary-Grove 2-1. It's South's first win over C-G since 2010.
