  • Cary-Grove steps up for 1st regional title Oct 2, 2012 12:00 AM
Cary-Grove boys golf coach Kelly Muzzy was simply hoping his team could survive the loaded Class 3A Crystal Lake South regional. Instead, his players thrived. A week after they finished fourth at the Fox Valley Conference Tournament with a team score of 327, the Trojans surprised the field at Red Tail Golf Club in Lakewood by traversing the par-72, 6,550-yard layout in 297 strokes to secure the first regional title in program history.

  • Crystal Lake Central makes first-half edge hold up Sep 28, 2012 12:00 AM
A famous shampoo brand taught us many years ago that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. That theory was certainly on display at Owen Metcalf Field in Crystal Lake Friday night. Grayslake Central outplayed and outscored Crystal Lake Central in the second half. However, the first-half events proved that the host Tigers were head and shoulders above the Rams as they ran away with a 38-14 homecoming and Fox Valley Fox divisional victory.

  • Huntley’s Ryan Craig tees off at the sixth hole in the Fox Valley Conference tournament at Crystal Woods Golf Course in Woodstock on Thursday.

Ryan Craig, Huntley nab FVC championships Sep 27, 2012 12:00 AM
Huntley's home golf course is Pinecrest, but senior Ryan Craig has always considered Crystal Woods Golf Club his second home. The Huntley standout lives about a mile from Crystal Woods, located on Illinois Route 47 in Woodstock. Thus, he has played it more times than he can count. That knowledge worked to his advantage Wednesday when the standout shot a 2-under par 70 to win the individual Fox Valley Conference Tournament title by 5 strokes, thereby leading the Red Raiders to their second straight FVC team title.

  • Crystal Lake S. bests Crystal Lake C. Aug 31, 2012 12:00 AM
Lake Larson dreamt of this day since he was a little kid. In some ways, some still might look at him as that little kid, The Crystal Lake South defensive back, who features a 5-foot-7, 175-pound frame that seems even shorter in person, might be one of the shorter kids on the field. But don't let that size fool you. He's the perfect example of what to do when your number gets called when a teammate goes down. Larson, who filled in for an injured Brandon LaPak and looked for redemption in his senior season return after not playing his junior year, played more like Brian Urlacher on Friday and was instrumental in South's 16-6 Fox Valley Conference crossover win over crosstown rival Crystal Lake Central at Ken Bruhn Field in front of roughly 4,000 fans

  • Final drive thwarts Huntley Aug 25, 2012 12:00 AM
At the 3:42 mark in the fourth quarter, new Huntley football coach John Hart looked primed to get his first coaching victory for Huntley after 27 years and 2 state championships in the state of Indiana. And all Huntley had to do to preserve a 26-21 win was hold onto the football to pull off quite an upset in the Fox Valley Conference crossover. Instead, a costly fumble inside the Crystal Lake Central 10-yard line with under 2 minutes remaining opened up the worst case scneario for the Red Raiders and one last chance for the Tigers.

FVC Fox competitive top to bottom Aug 22, 2012 12:00 AM
A football team has to be pretty sly these days to win the competitive Fox Division of the Fox Valley Conference outright. Three teams shared the Fox Division crown last season: Crystal Lake Central (6-4, 5-1), Grayslake Central (7-3, 5-1) and third-year program Woodstock North (7-3, 5-1). All three made the playoffs but lost in the first round. CL Central looks like the team to beat in this year's FVC Fox hunt, according to most league coaches, but the Tigers will likely be challenged by offensive powerhouse Grayslake North and skilled Woodstock North.

Thanks to sparkling play from junior goalkeeper Jordan Ginther and a little assistance from the crossbar, Kaneland managed to keep Crystal Lake Central off the scoreboard for over 70 minutes in Wednesdays Burlington Central Class 2A semifinal. But, after a pair of narrow misses earlier in the contest, Tigers senior Madie Edwards finally made the Knights pay. Edwards took Katie Becks pass from 35 yards out and launched a rocket off a diving Ginther into the top right corner with 7:45 remaining to give No. 3 seed Crystal Lake Central a 1-0 victory over the second-seeded Knights.

  • CL Central outlasts Grayslake Central Feb 14, 2012 12:00 AM
It’s hard to ask for a better defensive performance in the fourth quarter than what the Grayslake Central Rams put forth in a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division clash at Crystal Lake Central on Tuesday night. The Rams held the Tigers scoreless for virtually the entire period and limited the home team to just 8 shots while forcing 7 turnovers in the final quarter. But the one shot the Tigers hit proved to be the biggest shot of the night. An offensive rebound and putback from junior Kyle Fleck with 55 seconds left in the game were the only points of the final quarter for the Tigers. It proved to be just enough. Fleck’s bucket nearly was overshadowed by a 3-point attempt from Grayslake’s Danny Reed that just rimmed away as time expired, giving the Tigers a heart-stopping 57-55 win over the Rams.
