    The trout fishing season in the Forest Preserves of Cook County starts at dawn Saturday, April 5. Catchable-sized rainbow trout are being stocked this week into Axehead Lake, Belleau Lake, Horsetail Lake and, new this year, Green Lake.

    Golfers at the Harry Semrow Golf Driving Range in Des Plaines could soon be launching golf balls onto an open field that doubles as a reservoir during local flooding. The driving range, a 37-acre site at Golf and Rand roads, was identified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a possible location for a reservoir as one alternative to constructing a reservoir at historic Didier Farms near Lincolnshire.

    Foul play is not suspected in the death of a 37-year-old Wauconda man whose body was found in a forest preserve near Barrington Hills on Christmas Day, according to Cook County sheriff’s police. The man was confirmed to be the same as one who went missing Monday after last being seen at a Carpentersville bar.

    The Forest Preserves of Cook County will begin selling 2014 picnic permits online and in-person on Thursday, Jan. 2. New this year is an online permitting system, called ActiveNet, which allows residents to apply online for a variety of permits, including family and corporate picnics, walkathons and more.

    The Cook County Board unanimously approved a $179 million 2014 budget for its forest preserves Wednesday that includes $7 million for construction, development and capital improvements, and funding for a new transportation program to provide more county residents, particularly those from Chicago, access to the Brookfield Zoo. “This budget achieves our critical goals of protecting the diversity of plants and animals that depend on the preserves, and introducing new educational and recreational opportunities for County residents,” board President Toni Preckwinkle said

    A Waukegan man was found guilty Friday in a 2011 torture and murder case. Jose Horta, 21, of the 300 block of Edison Court, had been charged with first-degree murder in the death of David Campbell, 27, of Waukegan.

     
  • Elk Grove family gets closure from opening of bike bridge Nov 22, 2013 9:08 PM
    46-year-old Rosaleen Waters of Elk Grove Village was struck and killed by a vehicle in May as she crossed busy Higgins Road near the Elk Grove-Schaumburg border. Now her family members say they have some closure with the opening of a new overpass that connects the northern and southern portions of the Busse Woods trail. “For me, it’s a happy day,” her husband Tony Waters said.

    Installation has begun on the first of 10 new permanent toilet buildings for the Forest Preserves of Cook County. The restroom at the Bremen Grove Forest Preserve in south suburban Oak Forest is expected to open in mid-November. The remaining nine facilities will be installed in spring 2014.

    Fishermen who flocked to Axehead Lake in Park Ridge for the start of trout fishing season on Saturday found some new hot spots where the recently stocked fish gathered: fish cribs installed by a Mount Prospect Eagle Scout candidate. Cameron Sato, a Hersey High School freshman, worked with Jim Phillips, a fisheries biologist with the Cook County Forest Preserve District, to design his project.

Catchable-sized rainbow trout (½–1 pound) will be stocked into Axehead Lake, Belleau Lake, Horsetail Lake, and, new this year, Busse Reservoir North Pool.
