    Dozens of people had their heads shaved Sunday inside a Carol Stream school to raise money for the fight against pediatric cancer. The event was inspired by third-grader Jack O'Donoghue, who was diagnosed with cancer last year but is now in remission.

  • Registered sex offender arrested at Carol Stream school Feb 14, 2013 2:26 PM
    A registered sex offender was arrested in Carol Stream this week for attending children’s after-school activities with his girlfriend and her daughter, authorities said. Michael P. Infelise, 29, of the 1300 block of Terry Road in Glendale Heights, was arrested Wednesday at Heritage Lakes Elementary School and charged with one felony count of presence within a school zone by a sex offender.

    It's customary on the first day of school for teachers to get apples. And so it's fitting that at the onset of a major technology rollout program in Carol Stream Elementary District 93, teachers are getting the same — digital devices of the Apple variety. Sixth grade and kindergarten teachers in the district began receiving some 60 new iPads and MacBook Airs this week, officially kicking off the district's so-called "1:1 learning initiative" that aims to put a computer in the hands of every student in the district by 2015.

"It's the idea of personalizing education for kids," said Superintendent Bill Shields. "Teaching isn't something that takes place within four walls anymore."

    Beginning next year, any 3- or 4-year-old who resides within the attendance boundaries of Carol Stream School District 93 — which includes Carol Stream, Bloomingdale and Hanover Park — will be able to attend preschool at one central location. The new $5.5 million Early Childhood Center will combine the former District 93 headquarters building with a 14,000-square-foot addition, located at 280 Old Gary Ave., near Army Trail Road and Gary Avenue in Bloomingdale. Officials will break ground on the project during a ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday.

A total of 14 people were nominated for the awards. All who are nominated in the Judge’s Recognition category receive that award. The awards have been given out since 1965.
