  • Hall, Leyden positioned for trophy finishes Feb 21, 2014 9:19 PM
The Leyden girls bowling team has been one of the top athletic programs in the school the last four years, and now they’re adding to that distinction. After Friday’s opening session of the state tournament at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford, the talented Eagles are poised for their best finish ever. Leyden, whose senior-laden team has been to Rockford for four consecutive years, ended day one in second place — just behind leader Waubonsie Valley, the defending champs. And as usual senior Reba Hall, who has taken ninth and third individually in state the last two seasons, is leading the way. Hall has a great chance to win the individual state title. All six of her games Friday were over 200, with high marks of 279 and 257.

Schaumburg’s girls bowling team rolled its best game of the season, totaling 1,154 in its fourth game, and that carried the Saxons to the Zion-Benton sectional championship at Sunset Lanes in Waukegan on Saturday. Schaumburg will be making a trip back to the state tournament at Cherry Bowl in Rockford on Friday and Saturday. Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove and Libertyville also advanced out of the sectional. Grayslake North’s Sarah Littleton and Jessica Vaughn, Emma Wrenn of Hersey, Dundee-Crown’s Karissa Gonio and Amy Hollingswood of Zion-Benton also qualified for state.

  • Dundee-Crown a regional champ Feb 8, 2014 10:15 PM
It was a record-breaking day for the Dundee-Crown girls bowling team Saturday. The Chargers not only won their first postseason title in program history, but also set a new program record for highest 6-game series after placing first at the Buffalo Grove regional at Arlington Lanes in Arlington Heights.

  • Nifty finish lifts Grayslake North to regional win Feb 8, 2014 10:04 PM
Grayslake North’s girls bowling team had been in pursuit of a nice, round number all season long — reaching 1,000 in a game as a team. The Knights picked a nice time to attain that goal, bettering the mark by 29 pins in posting 1,029 in their final game on Saturday. It was more than enough for Grayslake North to take home the Round Lake regional championship with a 6-game total of 5,620 at Lakes Bowl in Round Lake. Warren earned the runner-up spot (5,556) as Antioch (5,338) and Zion-Benton (5,008) and Grayslake North all advanced to the Zion-Benton sectional, to be held next Saturday at Sunset Bowl in Waukegan. Sarah Littleton of Grayslake North finished as the top Individual with a 1,266.

  • Conant’s Anzalone excels as Elk Grove wins regional Feb 8, 2014 7:51 PM
Angela Anzalone wasn’t just bowling for herself and her teammates at Saturday’s regional tournament. She was also dedicating her performance to her late grandfather. Eugene Anzalone passed way last week, and Angela said that he was a “great supporter” of her athletic efforts at Conant. Somewhere up there, grandpa had to have a big smile on his face Saturday as his granddaughter excelled at Hoffman Bowl. Anzalone had the top score by a wide margin with a 6-game total of 1,303 in leading her team to a berth at next week’s Zion-Benton sectional. Conant, Elk Grove (winners of the regional with a score of 5695), Schaumburg and Mid-Suburban League champion Hoffman Estates all advanced to next weeks’s sectional tournament.

  • Jacobs, Dundee-Crown looking for postseason success Feb 6, 2014 7:39 PM
This year’s IHSA girls’ bowling state series features a new twist. A regional level of competition has been added where the top 4 teams in each regional and the top 10 individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the sectional round. Regionals get underway Saturday morning. District 300 neighbors Jacobs and Dundee-Crown are two Fox Valley-area teams looking to carry over regular-season success into the new postseason format.

  • Jacobs’ Biondo comes up big, finishes as runner-up Feb 1, 2014 10:52 PM
Jacobs’ Brian Biondo made his first appearance in the boys bowling state tournament one to remember. The junior became the first boy from his high school to finish as a state runner-up. He tried catching Joshaun Glover of Lincoln-Way East on the final day of competition at St. Clair Lanes in O’Fallon on Saturday, but Glover’s 12-game total of 2,957, which included a 300 game and 247 average, was enough to capture the championship.

  • Duff good enough; Hoffman Estates claims MSL crown Feb 1, 2014 6:03 PM
Kayleigh Duff was worried Friday. Not so much about how she’d perform at Saturday’s Mid-Suburban League girls bowling championship, but more about whether the meet would go on at all due to the impending snowstorm. “We were talking about it at school,” said the Elk Grove senior. “It looked like it was going to be bad and we heard that they had already postponed (some other events). But with our sport, sectionals and state come up so quickly there’s no time for rescheduling. So we were hoping for the best.” And with the tourney proceeding as scheduled, the best is what Duff delivered. She rolled a 257 game at Arlington Lanes en route to a 1,232 series and an overall season average of 202.62 to win the MSL individual championship. Hoffman Estates won the team title handily, scoring 173 points to 139 for the runner-up Grens.

  • Jacobs’ Biondo, Libertyville’s Baumruk in the hunt Jan 31, 2014 10:14 PM
Brandon Biondo of Jacobs and Jack Baumruk of Libertyville started out rolling with the best bowlers in the state on Friday at St. Clair Lanes in the boys bowling state tournament. Vernon Hills had two bowlers — Justin Becker and Chris Winter — make the cut to Saturday’s action, along with Joe Kauther and Andrew Tau of Lake Park.

  • Sloan, Libertyville savor special win Jan 31, 2014 9:40 PM
Libertyville’s girls bowling team won its first North Suburban Conference meet in 12 years on Friday. That great accomplishment was especially poignant for the Wildcats’ Taylor Sloan. She’d undergone heart surgery in August but managed to make her way back to compeitition in time to contribute to the team and sport she loves. “Actually, it didn’t hit me until after surgery, three months afterward,” said Sloan, a sophomore. “It’s a weird feeling. I never realized I’d really had heart surgery, until one day, we watched a video in Driver’s Ed class. That’s when it hit home. I went home cried to my mom (Jennifer).” No tears Friday — just cheers and smiles for Libertyville, which won during the 6-game tournament with a team total of 5,125 pins, beating runner-up Warren by 38 pins.

  • Wille, Hawks lead the way Jan 29, 2014 9:27 PM
Mid-Suburban League competitors weren’t just challenging the lanes and each other Wednesday night. They were also bowling for a cure. In an event spearheaded by Hoffman Estates and senior Sarah Wille, the MSL hosted a “Strike Out Cervical Cancer” fundraiser at the next to last conference meet of the season at Arlington Lanes. “I felt that was important to give back,” said Wille. “I’ve seen a lot of awareness initiatives in other sports over the years, but never one in our sport.” Wille led the way for the first-place Hawks in their match against Elk Grove as well, rolling the best game of the night, a 255, in their win over Elk Grove.
