Victory suits Karneevich, Buffalo Grove to a T Jan 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Buffalo Grove reveled in its best performance of the year at Wednesday's Mid-Suburban League girls bowling meet. And they were led by a bowler who just took up the sport last season. And this same girl has only been in the U.S. for three short years. Bison sophomore Valeria Karneevich opened the final game with four strikes and didn't miss a mark enroute to a 220 as BG defeated Barrington 9-0.

Waubonsie Valley rises above the fray at Prospect’s invite Jan 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Several Prospect junior varsity bowlers had possibly the most difficult assignment at Saturday's Knight's New Year Invitational in Mount Prospect. They weren't bowling — it was a varsity tournament, after all — so their job was to fight their way through the alley-to-wall crowds at the Brunswick Zone to bring the game totals back to the scorer's booth. "It was pretty rough," said freshman Amanda Lowe, while teammate Alexis Jagus echoed that sentiment. "Crazy," said Jagus. "Just too many people." That the tourney, now in its 24th season, draws a large and enthusiastic contingent of fans from as far west as the Mississippi River and as far south as Minooka, comes as no surprise to prep bowling insiders. The 36-team invite that takes up every available lane at Brunswick draws many of the state's top teams in a scene that rivals the state tournament — and this year's meet had Waubonsie Valley in the spotlight. The Warriors dominated the proceedings, winning with a tournament-record 6,353 pins knocked down, as senior Charley Barbary also set an individual meet mark.

Bears fans deserve better from playersDec 21, 2012 12:00 AM
With the price that Bears fans pay for skyboxes, they feel they deserve better treatment from players like Brian Urlacher and Jay Cutler. A singularly satisfying win for Nix, Elk Grove Dec 17, 2012 12:00 AM
Think that one lonely pin doesn't mean much in a three game bowling match? Think again, say the Elk Grove Grenadiers. Monday night at Arlington Lanes, the Grens edged Wheeling 2,605 pins to 2,604 to move into first place in the Mid-Suburban League. It all came down to the anchor bowler in the final frame, and Elk Grove senior anchor Abby Nix delivered in the clutch.

Antioch’s Scroggin thrives on life in the fast lane Dec 12, 2012 12:00 AM
Antioch's Sammie Scroggin knows how deal with pressure, which certainly helped out Wednesday afternoon as it all came down to the last ball, in the last frame. Scroggin, a freshman, picked up a 7 pin on her last shot which gave Antioch a 1-pin victory over Wauconda in the final game Wednesday afternoon. It might seem like a lot for a freshman, but Scroggins isn't your typical freshman. Her other sport, the one she spends time with when she's not bowling, is drag racing. Scroggin posted a 197 in that last game Wednesday as Sequoits won 912-911. Antioch also won the opening game 783-767. But Wauconda outscored Antioch in the second game 936-823 to win the series 2,604 to 2,518 at 3D Bowl in Island Lake. The Bulldogs took the match points 5-4. Scroggin rolled 176 and 159 in her other games for a 534 series. Her drag racing interest brings her to Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, Wis., on Saturdays from March through October.

Cusack’s clutch performance puts Prospect in MSL lead Dec 10, 2012 12:00 AM
A career night by Prospect junior bowler Nicole Cusack helped the Knights roll into sole possession of first place in the Mid-Suburban League. Cusack fired a 277 — the best in the MSL this season, and the seventh-highest game in Prospect history — in a straight-game team victory over Buffalo Grove. The junior also had Monday's top series, a 640.
