    Barrington officials say Thursday's rush-hour collision between a freight train and a semitrailer truck on Route 14 only strengthens their argument for a grade separation at the railroad crossing. "The traffic implications were unbelievable, even for the emergency responders," said Village President Karen Darch.

    They say it's tough to beat the same team three times in one season. Boy, didn't Deerfield almost become Exhibit A. The No. 2 Warriors rolled Barrington twice during the regular season, but needed three games and a couple of extra volleys in game 3 to get a 25-15, 22-25, 26-24 victory over the Broncos in the Antioch sectional semifinal. Deerfield, which improves to 31-6, will take on Vernon Hills at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Antioch sectional final. Third-seeded Barrington closes out its season with a 28-9 record.

    Barrington girls soccer coach Ryan Stengren realized to defeat Boylan Catholic the Fillies needed to contain Titans standout Abby Reed, who entered Friday night's sectional championship game with 49 goals. Mission accomplished. Barrington's stifling defense led by Aimee Pierce allowed the Indiana-bound senior only 1 shot on goal in the Fillies' 3-0 win over Boylan in the title game of the Class 4A Jacobs sectional. Barrington (17-4-1), which claimed its fifth straight sectional championship, advances to play in its own supersectional Tuesday against St. Charles North.

    The allure of getting to play their game before huge crowds on the final day of the boys tennis state tournament eluded both Vincent Lin and Mack Galvin on Friday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. Lin (22-1), a sophomore, suffered his first defeat of the year to top seed Martin Joyce of Hinsdale Central in the quarterfinals. Galvin a freshman from Rolling Meadows, fell to 3-4 seed Jeremy Bush (29-4) of Stevenson in the fourth round, sending the two superb young players from the Mid-Suburban League into the backdraw.

    DeLoye, Barrington quickly get back on track downstate May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
    The disappointment that Barrington junior Parker Deloye felt after the high jump went away — quickly. All it took was two laps around the track by the members of the Broncos' 800-meter relay team, and all was well again with Deloye. During the prelims session of the Class 3A boys track and field state championships at Eastern Illinois University and O'Brien Field, Deloye missed the cut in the high jump but bounced back with a robust leadoff leg on the Broncos 800 relay. JP Brooks, Brendan Melynchuk and Scotty Miller joined him in a school record 1:28.64 to earn a spot in Saturdays' finals as the third overall seed. "This definitely makes up for earlier," Deloye said.

Fremd pitcher Jon Escobar handcuffed St. Viator while Austin Jetel stole home in the first inning as the Vikings (20-9) advanced to Saturday's regional title game against Buffalo Grove at 1 p.m.

    Six students from Algonquin Lakes Elementary School were sent to area hospitals for evaluation Thursday afternoon after they were injured in a bounce house during an indoor school celebration, officials said. Another 11 students were treated at the school and released to their parents. There were no serious injuries.

    Their rocket crashed during a test run, but a Harper College-based team of science and engineering students took fourth place in a national NASA rocketry competition, besting big names like MIT and Northwestern. The Rolling Meadows frosh booked his place in today’s fourth round championship bracket after an impressive 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over 9-16 seed Brandon Harris (24-7) of Edwardsville. The earned Galvin a spot opposite 3-4 seed Jeremy Bush, a four-time state qualifier from state power Stevenson. Schaumburg sophomore Vincent Lin will join Galvin in the round of 16 after a strong showing Thursday.
