    As projected tens of thousands from across the United States join in a National March Against Police Brutality this Saturday, members of the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 5603 Bull Valley Road in McHenry, will bring the message the “Black Lives Matter” to McHenry County in a roadside vigil at the intersection of Bull Valley Road and Crystal Lake Road in McHenry at 12:30 p.m.

    Adding “donate blood” to the top your holiday to-do list could provide a lifesaving gift for someone this holiday season. Donation centers seek blood products year-round to supply health care facilities across the country, but the need over the holidays is greater as high school and college students go on break and fewer blood drives are held. “It’s a commitment, but people need to understand what a lifesaving effort donating blood is,” says Dr. Bruce Hyman, vice president of medical management at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. “You want it on the shelf when you need it. It’s vital for hospitals to stock adequately for emergencies and trauma situations.” Sherman Hospital is partnering with Heartland Blood Centers for a blood drive from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22.

    Algonquin is getting a new police chief after nearly 30 years. Deputy Chief John Bucci has been tapped to take over the reins from Police Chief Russell Laine, who has been chief since 1985 and will retire from the post Dec. 15. Bucci will be sworn in Dec. 16. “I’m very honored and excited about the opportunity,” said Bucci, 42, of Poplar Grove.

    Representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Friends of Hackmatack Wildlife Refuge, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the McHenry County Audubon Society will be on hand from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at three locations along the Fox River to help you search for eagles — McHenry Dam, Algonquin Dam and Carpentersville Dam.

    While on a pilgrimage to Rome, George and Jo Ann Lazansky’s faith was tested to the utmost when their airplane was hijacked and held hostage by terrorists on June 14, 1985. The Lazanskys were among 20 members of the St. Margaret Mary Parish in Algonquin taken hostage that day. They will share the story of their harrowing experience as part of the “Faith on Fire!” series of talks as part of its centennial.
