Kirk Players stage free dramatic reading of '1984'

Kirk Players will present free performances of the book "1984" by George Orwell, in the form of a full-cast dramatic reading, from the play adapted by Robert Owens, Wilton E. Hall Jr. and William A Miles Jr.

The performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 1 and 2, at Lakeside Recreation Center, 900 South Lake St., Mundelein.

While seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis, both performances are free and open to the public.

The messages within the story maintain impact and relevance, from the time when it was published in 1949, to 1984 when it was to have taken place, to the present.

"1984" is the story of survival by two party members who commit treason, by falling in love, under the ongoing watchful eye of Big Brother.

"I cannot believe how well this story resonates in 2018," producer Marille C.C. Rusiniak said. "Our audiences will walk out of the readings discussing the show."

"This is so exciting for the Kirk Players," director Patrick Blake said. "Last season, we performed our first staged radio play. This year, we are performing a dramatic reading for the first time. After 52 years, the Kirk Players continue to find new ways to entertain our audiences as well as contribute to Lake County."

Since it is a dramatic reading, there are no sets, costumes, or effects. The cast must portray everything with their voices. Additionally, since some roles have only a few lines, many cast members play two or three roles, distinguishing their various roles through unique vocal interpretations for each.

Cast members include Randy Marginson as Winston, Jessica Motyka as Julia, Susie Hill as the Loudspeaker, Martin Hill as O'Brien, Bev Karns as Parsons, and Nick Ahlstrand as Syme.

The performance is approximately two hours, with an intermission. A question-and-answer session with the actors will follow each performance. For more information, visit www.kirkplayers.org.
