Wheaton student receives Horatio Alger scholarship

A Wheaton Warrenville South High School student, Carleigh Lewaniak of Wheaton, is among 106 recipients of the prestigious 2018 Horatio Alger National Scholarship.

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., is a nonprofit educational group that honors the achievements of outstanding individuals and encourages youth to pursue their dreams through higher education.

The scholarships recognize outstanding students who, in the face of personal adversity, exhibit an unwavering commitment to pursue their dreams through higher education.

Since the scholarship program was created in 1984, more than 25,000 students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada have received more than $125 million for undergraduate and graduate studies.

Administering one of the nation's largest privately-funded, need-based financial aid programs for college students, the association will award more than $2.6 million to its National Scholars in 2018.

"Despite the significant challenges these students have faced in their young lives, they are deeply committed to pursuing higher education and serving their communities," said Matthew Rose, association president and a 2013 Horatio Alger Award recipient.

"My fellow members and I applaud their perseverance and look forward to supporting and mentoring each of these scholars as they continue on their journey toward a bright future."

The recipients are students who come from households with an average income of $12,996 a year but maintain an average GPA of 3.8.

Each recipient is awarded $25,000 to apply toward the educational costs of the college or university of their choice and will have access to association-provided resources, including counseling and referral services, internship opportunities and alumni connections.

In addition to the scholarship, each recipient receives a trip to Washington, D.C., from April 5 to 7 to attend the Horatio Alger National Scholars Conference and participate in college-preparedness and other educational sessions.

The scholars will have a chance to learn about the association, its members and the support programs in which they can partake during their collegiate careers.

The scholars also will be recognized at the association's 71st Horatio Alger Award Induction Ceremonies, during which 12 members will be inducted.

The Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program and National Scholars Conference are wholly funded through private donations from association members and friends.
