Buffalo Grove police host first 'Shop with a Cop'

On Saturday, Dec. 2, the Buffalo Grove Police Department hosted the agency's inaugural "Shop with a Cop" event.

The department was gifted with a generous donation from the Temple Chai Brotherhood, which allowed the police department to purchase gift cards at Target, 1400 W. Lake-Cook Road, in Wheeling.

The department identified 10 in-need local children to provide gifts for, due to personal or financial family hardships. The officers, who volunteered for the event, spent about an hour shopping at Target with the youth. The children were allowed to pick out one gift for themselves, and could spend the remainder of the gift card on family and loved ones.

After shopping, the youth were brought back to the Buffalo Grove Police Station, where there were gift wrapping stations and treats waiting for them, courtesy of Target. Nino's Pizzeria and Catering of Buffalo Grove donated pizzas for the children, officers, families and volunteers to enjoy.

"The officers appreciated the opportunity to spend time forming relationships with children from the community outside of their normal patrol activities," said Deputy Chief Michael Szos, who also participated in the event. "The kids had a great day, and enjoyed getting a tour of the police department."

The children left the station with a holiday card from the police department; including a gift card to Culver's, 450 McHenry Road, Buffalo Grove, which were also donated.
