Former Hawk Brent Sopel to speak in Elmhurst
Former Chicago Blackhawk Brent Sopel will talk about some of the challenges he has overcome during life at an appearance at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, in the York High School gym, 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst.
The presentation, sponsored by the City of Elmhurst Commission on Youth, is most appropriate for students in sixth grade and older.
A champion of causes, Sopel these days defends underdogs in all walks of life. He says he no longer is hiding "behind the stick" as he reveals his own hidden challenges with a learning disability, dyslexia and dysgraphia.
Winners and champions aren't those without struggles, he says; they are the people who overcome them.
The battles Sopel fought on the ice left visible scars, but the invisible wounds he suffered cut deeper, he says. His personal story has directed him toward a path of advocating for others struggling with similar obstacles with a mission focused on:
• being a champion for dyslexia and dysgraphia awareness;
• being a champion for alcohol- and drug-addiction recovery; and
• being a champion for youth training and mentoring.
