LGBT advocate to speak at Elmhurst College

Ryan Thoreson will present "Transnational LGBT Activism: Working for Sexual Rights Worldwide" at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the founders Lounge of the Frick Center at Elmhurst College, 190 Prospect Ave., Elmhurst. He is this year's William R. Johnson Intercultural Lecturer.

Thoreson, the Yale Law School Robert L. Bernstein International Human Rights Fellow at Human Rights Watch, focuses on transnational advocacy around lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, LGBT youth issues, and the balance of religious liberty and sexual rights.

Before joining Human Rights Watch, Thoreson clerked for the Hon. Scott M. Matheson Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and was a research fellow at OutRight Action International. He is the author of "Transnational LGBT Activism: Working for Sexual Rights Worldwide" (University of Minnesota Press, 2014), and teaches about sexuality, law and politics as an adjunct assistant professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
