Fun Fest raises funds for brain tumor research
The fourth annual EISUS Fun Fest will raise funds for the American Brain Tumor Association.
This newest venture of the Susan Jurkonis Memorial Scholarship Foundation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Cortesi Veteran's Park, 320 E. Kenilworth, Villa Park.
The goal of being "Committed to the Cure" for brain tumors began when Susan Jurkonis was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor.
A Purdue University volleyball scholarship player from Willowbrook High School, Jurkonis was a strong player and formidable competitor thanks to her hard work and determination.
When the diagnosis was made, she began using those same traits to compete with the disease, but the disease won.
In her memory, the foundation was created to provide scholarships for outstanding young men and women at Willowbrook, to provide support for brain tumor research, and to remember Jurkonis.
The EISUS and Susie's Smash, a badminton tournament held in May, provide funds for these donations.
Fun fest activities include raffle tickets, music, pizza, beverages and games. Adults can use their game tickets to participate in games similar to the "Minute to Win It" format, and children can use their tickets to play at numerous games or have their faces painted.
Admission is free and the cost of tickets is minimal to encourage participation and family time. All of the money raised is given to the American Brain Tumor Association.
Many volunteers help make the event a success. From the first three fun fests, approximately $14,000 has been donated to the American Brain Tumor Association.
