Holistic doctors to speak about sugars and fats in Northbrook Sept. 7

Riverwoods, Ill. - Do fats make us fat? Are all sugars really bad?

Dr. Jerry Gore, MD, author of the book "Holistic Medicine," and Katie Bogaard, a naturopathic practitioner, will address these and other nutritional myths during a free lecture entitled "Choosing the Right Sugars and Fats" at the Northbrook Public Library, 1201 Cedar Lane, Northbrook, on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. Copies of Dr. Gore's book will be available for purchase at the end of the event.

A native of Northbrook, Dr. Gore has been practicing holistic medicine for more than 30 years, and is the medical director of the Center for Holistic Medicine in Riverwoods. Dr. Gore says many people misunderstand the role that sugars and fats play in our diets and assume that all sugars and fats are bad, when in fact they're not.

"Sugar is what makes people fat, not fat. But that doesn't mean that all fats are good. And it also doesn't mean that all sugars are evil," Dr. Gore explains. "Some types of sugar, for example, carbohydrates, are important to our diet, but it is important to understand what types of carbohydrates are better than others and how they function in our body. The same is true with fats. Some fats will literally kill you, while others will protect your brain from deteriorating."

In this lecture, Gore and Bogaard will explain what sugars and fats do to our bodies, why we need to have some of them in our diet and what the best kinds are to consume. Other topics that will be discussed include:

• Is there such a thing as good or bad sugars and fats?

• Sugars, fats and weight loss

• Sugars, fats and how they affect inflammation, which leads to hypertension, heart disease, etc.

• Glycemic index and glycemic load explained

• The "good" in cholesterol and saturated fats like butter and coconut oil

• Specific recommendations for the best sugars, fats and oils to eat

• Dietary fads

"Many people have heard that sugar is 'bad' for us, but they don't really understand what it does to the body," Dr. Gore says. "In this talk, I'll explain how staying off refined sugars, keeping carbohydrates to a reasonable level, and eating healthy, organic, grass-fed saturated-fat products, can help you lose weight while also feeling satisfied and enjoying the process."

Over his 33-year career, Dr. Gore has treated people with illnesses as common as flus, colds and allergies to as complex as fibromyalgia, gastro-intestinal disorders, hypertension, depression and immune disorders using a holistic approach. Now, he has compiled his years of on-the-job medical wisdom into an easy-to-read, comprehensive book that explains what holistic medicine is and how you can use it to live a happier, healthier life. His book, Holistic Medicine: Physical Health, Peace of Mind and Clarity of Consciousness, is available for purchase on Amazon.

"Too often, traditional medicine only treats the symptoms of a problem, but not the problem itself," Dr. Gore explains. "For example, when people have heartburn, they're told to take heartburn medication, which helps temporarily. But too often people don't get to the root of the problem about what causes the heartburn in the first place. I hope this book can help change that."
