Elgin to host 19th annual New Citizens Ceremony

Recently naturalized United States citizens are invited to be honored at Elgin's 19th annual New Citizen Recognition Ceremony at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 28.

The event will be in the Heritage Ballroom at the Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way, as part of the city council meeting.

New citizens that have been naturalized in the past year who live or work in Elgin, and those who have prepared for or applied for naturalization through local agencies, are eligible to participate. The event is open to the public.

Honorees will receive a certificate and a U.S. flag lapel pin, and they will be personally congratulated on their achievement by Mayor David Kaptain and members of the Elgin City Council. A reception sponsored by state Sen. Cristina Castro, state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, state Rep. Steve Andersson, and state Rep. Anna Moeller will follow the ceremony.

This ceremony is coordinated by Elgin's New Citizen Recognition Committee, a group of community volunteers including representatives from Elgin Community College, Gail Borden Public Library, The Literacy Connection, Centro de InformaciĆ³n, and the community.
