Attend World's Largest Swim Lesson in Gurnee

Drowning is silent and can happen in seconds. Gurnee Park District is making noise this summer to save lives.

On Thursday, June 22, GPD will host a free World's Largest Swim Lesson from 7:10-7:40 p.m. at Hunt Club Park Aquatic Center, 900 N. Hunt Club Road, Gurnee. Registration is required, but prior swim experience is not necessary.

The World's Largest Swim Lesson is an annual event held at pools, water parks and other aquatic facilities worldwide to build awareness of the importance of teaching children to swim.

"Drowning is a national issue, and we don't want our community to be a part of the statistics," said Kara Moss, aquatic manager with GPD.

Internationally, the World Health Organization estimates drowning is one of the top five causes of death for people ages 1-14 in 48 of the 85 countries it monitors around the globe. Swimming is a vital lifesaving skill.

The World's Largest Swim Lesson is a great way to introduce nonswimmers to the water and begin to teach lifesaving safety skills.

"We can and will make a difference in the lives of our Gurnee residents," Moss said. "We hope everyone will be able to join us this year so we can make an even bigger impact than last year."

Learning how to swim is the strongest defense against drowning. Children who need more confidence in the water, help building their endurance, and assistance in learning how to swim can enroll in the Gurnee Park District Swim School.

"We want to ensure every child is safe this summer," Moss said. "Our number one priority always is and will be safety."
