Join in annual Fish For Fun event June 3 in Elgin

The annual Fish For Fun event will be 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside, off Randall Road in Elgin. The event is sponsored by the City of Elgin, Elgin's Recreation Center and the Elgin Chapter of the Izaak Walton League along with help from Elgin's Ace Hardware stores.

A fishing experience will often teach patience and make children aware of the sights and sounds of the outdoors while being very close to home. Wood ducks live nearby. Hawthorne Hill is a nature preserve, so remember also, that poison ivy is a possible plant in the area. "Leaves of three, leave it be!"

Ike volunteers will be on hand for registration, weighing and recording the fish. There will be rod and reel sets donated by the Izaak Walton League as prizes. The Elgin Recreation Center will have a small supply of rods and reels available for use. Corn will be provided for bait.

The Elgin Izaak Walton League, chartered in 1931, is celebrating 86 years of conservation and environmental activism in Elgin this year. The chapter has been involved in youth fishing education and etiquette for all these many years.

The community is encouraged to participate in this fishing event as a family. Moms, dads and grandparents are all welcome. The youth must be accompanied by an adult. The child must catch and land the fish.
