Lincolnshire Police Department names 2016 Officer of the Year

Submitted by the village of Lincolnshire

In March of 2017, Chief Joseph Leonas with the Lincolnshire Police Department announced the agency's 2016 Officer of the Year: Detective Matthew Ulanowski.

Ulanowski was awarded this title for going above and beyond his duties as a detective. Over the course of the year, he was the primary investigator assigned to 47 cases. In addition to the Lincolnshire cases, he responded to 11 Lake County Major Crime Task Force cases, which included homicides, in-custody deaths, and officer-involved shootings.

During 2016, he successfully trained two officers to fulfill their new role as detectives.

In December of 2016, Ulanowski received a commendation for his involvement in a case in which he and his partner identified a suspicious person at a local bank. A short while later, Ulanowski and his partner subsequently located bank checkbooks with names of three different people and masks inside the suspicious person's vehicle.

Ulanowski regularly familiarizes himself with crime trends and, as a result of his awareness of various criminal activities occurring at nearby banks, he took action on the suspicious behavior, possibly thwarting a crime in Lincolnshire.

Ulanowski's work ethic, dedication, and determination throughout the year made him an easy choice for the 2016 Officer of the Year.
