Glenbrook Elementary principal earns honor

Hanover Township recently honored Glenbrook Principal Cheryl DeRoo as its 2017 "Principal of the Year," as part of its annual Celebration of Leadership.

Staff and students said Principal DeRoo stands out as a collaborative leader who models top instructional skills as well as dedication and professionalism.

"One of the distinguishing qualities of Cheryl's leadership is her willingness and ability to problem-solve and collaborate with students, staff and parents," said Dr. Ushma Shah, assistant superintendent for elementary schools, instruction and equity. "She values the perspectives of others and is a learner who is continuously getting better at her own coaching tool kit so that she can be even more effective in developing those around her."

Glenbrook Elementary, "Home of the Hawks," is a K-6 school in Streamwood with about 569 students. More than half of the students are from low-income families and more than a third are English Language Learners but the school outpaces the state average on many student performance metrics. The Streamwood elementary school has earned accolades in recent years, including being named to Chicago Magazine's 2016 list of top suburban schools.

"She genuinely is dedicated to what she does," said Renee Dauksavage, a fifth-grade Glenbrook teacher. "It's always about the kids for her. She gives 200 percent and she inspires others to do the same. It's a pleasure to work with her."

Principal DeRoo was one of 11 community youth and adult leaders who were recognized on May 2 for their leadership and service as positive role models.

This award, part of Hanover Township's Committee on Youth Annual Celebration of Leadership, is given to a principal from a township-area school, including primary, secondary, alternative education and private schools. Nominees for Principal of the Year must serve as an example to others, create positive change, be actively involved and take initiative.

Principal DeRoo maintains a weekly principal blog that highlights various programs and experiences that make a difference for Glenbrook students. She is involved in several districtwide initiatives focused on improving instruction and operational excellence.

"The Principal of the Year award is the result of Principal DeRoo's hard work and dedication," said U-46 CEO Tony Sanders. "She has demonstrated a commitment to her team, her parents and especially her students."

A graduate of Elgin High School, DeRoo earned her bachelor of science degree in elementary education at Eastern Illinois University and her master's degree in education from Aurora University. She is pursuing her doctorate in curriculum, instruction and policy through National Louis University. She has worked in the district for 20 years, teaching at Channing and Willard elementary schools before becoming a district literacy coach and later taking the principal role at Glenbrook a decade ago (2006-07 school year.) Staff, family and friends gathered on Tuesday, May 2, at the Hanover Township Senior Center in Bartlett to celebrate Principal DeRoo's achievement.
