Schaumburg Library Holds Citizenship Ceremony

Representing 26 countries from all corners of the globe, 75 immigrants raised their right hands to take the U.S. Naturalization Oath on Friday, April 21, at the Schaumburg Township District Library. For several years, these ceremonies have been held semiannually in cooperation with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Many immigrants come to classes at the library to learn English and prepare for becoming U.S. citizens.

The ceremony began with a brief welcome and instructions from USCIS Officer Carlos Covarrubias and a keynote speech by Library Board President Julie Wroblewski Bosshart. Following the welcome, the citizens-to-be were honored with the Presentation of Colors by the Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates American Legion Post 1983 before the Oath of Allegiance was administered by the USCIS District Director.

"It's amazing to see a dream take shape," said Helen Stewart, Community Engagement librarian. "This day is the product of immense work on the part of the new citizens. We salute them all."

Information about Fall literacy and citizenship classes available at the Schaumburg Library will be published in the August-September Guide which is mailed to Schaumburg Township residents, and at www.schaumburglibrary.org. Interest persons may also send an email to Helen Stewart at hstewart@stdl.org, or call her at (847) 923-3387.
