Glenbard North to stage 'The Last Night of Ballyhoo'

Set in 1939 in Atlanta during the world premiere of "Gone with the Wind" and just after Hitler's invasion of Poland, Alfred Uhry's Tony Award-winning comedy "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" presents a look into the lives of the upper-crust Jewish Freitag family.

Glenbard North High School will present the show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday, May 4-6, in the Little Theatre at Glenbard North, 990 Kuhn Road, Carol Stream.

The Freitag family includes Adolf, owner of the Dixie Bedding Company; his widowed sister Boo; and widowed sister-in-law Reba; as well as nieces Lala and Sunny.

Their biggest concern is preparing for the social event of the year - a ball called "Ballyhoo." Secure in their status, yet still overly concerned about appearances, the Freitag family members take great pains to make sure they are seen as upstanding members of society.

But the family's pretense and posturing come to light when college-age Sunny gets romantically involved with Joe, whom Boo believes is several social rungs below the Freitags. Everyone must confront his or her own beliefs, prejudices and desires.

The family will never be the same as they take a journey filled with comedy, romance and revelations. They must face where they come from and deal with who they really are.

The cast features Colin Bannon as Adolf Freitag, Rebecca Munoz as Boo Levy, Samantha O'Connell as Reba Freitag, Katie Flynn as Lala Levy, Demi Dumovich as Sunny Freitag, Andrew Brejla as Joe Farkas, and Daniel Frusolone as Peachy Weil.

Nathan King is the director; David Barone is the technical director; Arielle Valene is associate director of theater; Jolaine Orlin is associate technical director; Robyn Scurek is associate drama director/choreographer; and David Nielsen is the associate lighting director.
