Activist Jeanne White-Ginder to speak at ECC:
AIDS activist Jeanne White-Ginder, mother of the late Ryan White, will be the keynote speaker at the 8 a.m. Dec. 1 World AIDS Day Breakfast at Elgin Community College. White-Ginder's son, Ryan, died of AIDS-related complications in 1990 after receiving a blood transfusion to treat his hemophilia. The Indiana teenager became the nation's first public face of AIDS during a period when the disease was widely misunderstood. The breakfast will be held in the Student Resource Center Community and Heritage Rooms on the main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. Tickets are $10. To reserve a seat, call (847) 214-7370.
NIU's new Web site for alums:
Northern Illinois University has launched a new interactive Web site that allows faculty and alumni to reconnect and share favorite memories. The Web site can be found at niu.edu/clas50. It features a brief history of the college, a calendar of anniversary-related events throughout the year and a directory of alumni allowing former students to reconnect. Visitors also can share stories, photos and videos.
Volunteers for recycling program:
Kane County is seeking adult volunteers to assist with its electronics recycling program. Volunteers are needed to help unload electronics equipment such as computers, televisions and telephones from the public's vehicles. The program operates on the second Friday and Saturday of each month at the Circuit Clerk building on Randall Road in St. Charles. Since the program began in 2001, more than 38,000 residents and businesses have recycled more than 4.3 million pounds of used electronics. For details, call the county's recycling office at (630) 208-3841 or e-mail recycle@co.kane.il.us.
