Naperville's Scott Elementary School is expected to reopen Monday after cleaning crews complete their work in the wake of a fire Friday morning that damaged part of the building.
All students and staff were evacuated around 9:50 a.m. Friday when a fire broke out in the boys bathroom at 500 Warwick Drive.
No one was injured, Naperville firefighters said, but smoke filled the building and forced the evacuation.
Students and staff were transported to Madison Junior High to continue the school day and have lunch, according to the Scott School Web site.
Kindergarten was canceled for Friday and Naperville Park District programs and other activities housed at Scott were canceled until further notice.
"The evacuation was done very effectively, they did a great job at that," Deputy Fire Chief Mike Zywanski said.
At the end of the school day, students were bused back to Scott for dismissal at 2:30 p.m. They were not allowed to enter the building to collect their backpacks or belongings, which also will be cleaned this weekend.
Zywanski said the fire was small and its cause was still unknown early Friday evening, but the bulk of the damage seemed to be contained to the bathroom area.
"It wasn't anything of a large magnitude and was extinguished quickly," he said.
Cost estimates for the damage were not available.
School officials will continue to notify parents of any changes to Scott School's schedule at the Web site, schools.naperville203.org/scott.
