One person was slightly injured in an early morning townhouse fire in the 7300 block of Winthrop Way in unincorporated Downers Grove, fire officials from the Darien Woodridge Fire Protection District said in a news release Wednesday.

The fire started in one of the units of the townhome complex at 5:30 a.m., the release continues.

Firefighters on the scene reported a fire in the kitchen, with a lot of smoke in the unit.

While firefighters tried to extinguish the fire, another team searched the unit and found a semi-conscious female laying on the ground of the second floor. The woman was removed to an ambulance, the release reads, as a second female was located unharmed in the basement of this unit.

Both women were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for further treatment and for observation, officials said.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the stove and cabinet above it, but not before causing about $5,000 worth of damage. Investigators believe the fire started due to food left cooking on the stove from the previous night.

Darien-Woodridge firefighters were assisted at the scene by Downers Grove and Westmont fire departments.
