A fire broke out at an Elgin townhouse Wednesday night but the lone occupant escaped unharmed, officials said.

Firefighters were called to 14 Kensington Loop in the Garden Quarters townhouse complex about 9:08 p.m.

"Flames were just pouring out of the kitchen," said Terri Mousel, who lives several doors down.

Battalion Chief Greg Benson said the owner of the townhouse made the call to firefighters who arrived on scene in three-and-a-half minutes.

Upon arriving, they found heavy fire in the rear of the townhouse and had it under control within 15 minutes of the initial call, according to Benson.

Neither the homeowner or firefighters sustained any injuries.

Benson said there is extensive fire damage in the kitchen and lower level of the home and smoke damage throughout the unit. He estimates the total damage to the structure and contents to be about $200,000.

The fire did not spread beyond the initial townhouse though at least one other unit was temporarily evacuated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
