HAMMOND, Ind. -- A nearly full-size foam replica of the Statue of Liberty now in storage in northwestern Indiana could see new life if Chicago is picked to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

The 130-foot, 50,000-pound statue has been in storage in Hammond since it was given to the city last year by the Griffith printing company that built it for display at a convention in St. Louis.

The Hammond mayor's chief of staff says the city has been contacted by some interested in using the statue in connection with Olympic events.

Rick Calinski says the city has no immediate plans for the statue. Engineers determined last year that it wouldn't survive for long if erected outdoors as proposed along the Indiana Toll Road.
