Gannett Co.'s USA Today may lose 3 percent of its daily circulation under a plan by hotel company Marriott International Inc. to limit free newspapers based on customer preference, a spokeswoman said.
The drop would represent about 68,000 copies daily, based on last year's circulation, down 2 percent to 2.26 million copies, according to a Gannett securities filing.
"It will be a very small impact," said Alexandra Nicholson, a spokeswoman for USA Today in McLean, Virginia.
Marriott said today it will give customers the choice to receive free newspapers at its 2,600 hotels after demand for them plunged 25 percent.
Robert Christie, a spokesman for News Corp.'s Wall Street Journal, which is also distributed in hotels, declined to give an estimate of the impact of Marriott's change.
