Cubs catcher Geovany Soto underwent a precautionary MRI on his right shoulder Thursday.
Team officials said the MRI, performed in Chicago, turned up clean and revealed that Soto has nothing more than inflammation or irritation in the shoulder.
The Cubs do not expect to put Soto on the disabled list and say that he could be out for two or three more games.
The Cubs open a weekend series Friday at Milwaukee, and Koyie Hill will get the start behind the plate.
The 26-year-old Soto, last year's Rookie of the Year in the National League, came out of Tuesday's game at Houston early. He reported feeling discomfort after trying to throw out the Astros' Kaz Matsui trying to steal second base.
At the plate, Soto was 1-for-4 on Opening Day and 0-for-1 before coming out Tuesday. He hit 23 home runs last year.
If Soto were to have to go on the DL, the Cubs likely would bring up veteran catcher Mark Johnson from Class AAA Iowa.
