A 26-year-old Algonquin man who authorities say pretended to be an interested buyer to burglarize a home that was for sale was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison.

David C. Malone, of the 200 block of Grandview Court, admitted guilt to that and another theft under a plea deal in which he avoided a prison term of up to 15 years for stealing from three Algonquin homes.

Malone must also pay $2,883 restitution to three victims.

Under his deal, Malone admitted to a burglary charge stemming from an April 14 incident in which he entered a home for sale under the guise of being a potential buyer and stole a wallet from its owner's purse.

He also admitted guilt to a theft charge alleging he stole several pieces of jewelry from another Algonquin residence and had a friend pawn them in Hoffman Estates.

Charges of residential burglary and theft involving another April 14 break-in were dismissed as part of the plea deal, but Malone agreed to pay restitution to that home's owners.
