Prospect's Walsh, Scaccia finish together at MVC tourney

Two of the top golfers in Prospect history, who helped the Knights to state titles in 2011 and 2013 and a runner-up trophy in 2012, wrapped up their collegiate careers last week while playing in back-to-back groups.

Illinois State senior Kiley Walsh shot a 3-over-par 75 (39-36) in her final round with a 227 (80-72-75) to finish 10th at the Missouri Valley Conference women's golf championship in Newport, Kanas, while Bradley senior Ally Scaccia's 228 round placed her in a tie for 14th.

Walsh shot 3-over-par on the front nine before tallying two birdies on the back nine for an even-par 36.

While playing at Prospect for coach Jim Hamann, Walsh tied for fifth and Scaccia finished seventh in the 2013 state tournament.

"Kiley and Ally are two tremendous people," said Hamann, a math teacher at Prospect. "Words cannot describe their leadership skills, commitment to excellence and compassion for others."

Scaccia took home All-Valley honors for the second consecutive year and capped her career with a 5-over 77 in the final round. She had a career stroke average of 76.74 to rank third in school history and she played a school record 123 career rounds as a Brave. In addition, her career-best 76.14 stroke average for the year was second on the team and ranks 10th among Bradley season marks.

Kiley finished with four top-10 finishes in the MVC Championship. She was 17th as a freshman, ninth as a sophomore and fourth as a junior. Her lifetime conference championship scoring average was 76.0, besting her regular season lifetime scoring average of 77.39.

Also, the MVC Championship 25th Anniversary team brochure listed Walsh's 2015-16 single-season scoring average of 74.96 as the 11th best single-season average in the history of the conference.

"Kiley and Ally had outstanding college careers on the golf course and in the classroom," Hamann said. "These two girls' stories from their freshman year at Prospect to finishing strong in their final round last Tuesday is an adventure that all of us teachers and coaches should be extremely proud of."

Wrestling fundraiser

The inaugural Team Maddux/Home Run For Hope event will be at Prospect on Sunday, April 29. The Freestyle Wrestling Development Tournament with all the proceeds going to the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.

The event will be hosted by Prospect wrestling coach Tom Whalen and his program.

One of Whalen's assistants, John Joseph, a former star wrestler at Hersey, saw his-then 8-month old son Maddux diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer. He won his battle with cancer but passed away just a few months short of his second birthday.

In the past, Team Maddux/Home Run for Hope has supported other events in its quest to raise money for Lurie, including a 5K Walk-Run, Dine to Donate and open gyms at local gymnastic clubs.

"It's the support of the wrestling families of Prospect which has enabled us to put together an event such as this which will help raise money that will all go to the Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago." said Whalen, who has assembled one of the top wrestling teams in the area during his nine years as head coach at Prospect.

One year after Matt Wroblewski won the Knights' first individual state championship since Matt Boggess in 2009, Whalen led Prospect to a Mid-Suburban League and regional title this past winter.

Following the weigh-in from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., brackets will be put together for this round-robin tournament, which will take place on six mats beginning at 10 a.m.

Questions can be directed to Tom Whalen at Prospect High School (847-718-5389) or tom.whalen @d214.org.
