White Sox bring back Thompson in trade; deal Saladino to Brewers

Welcome back, Trayce Thompson.

See you later, Tyler Saladino.

The Chicago White Sox made a pair of trades Thursday night, acquiring outfielder Trayce Thompson from the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations and sending infielder Tyler Saladino to the Milwaukee Brewers for cash.

A second-round draft pick in 2009, Thompson made his major-league debut with the Sox in 2015, batting .295 with 5 home runs and 16 RBI in 33 games.

After the season, Thompson was sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-way trade that brought Todd Frazier to the White Sox.

Thompson was playing well for the Dodgers in 2016, batting .225 with 13 home runs and 32 RBI in 80 games before he missed the second half of the season with two small stress fractures in his back.

The 27-year-old Thompson, who is the younger brother of Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson, played in just 27 games with the Dodgers in 2017, batting .122.

He was claimed off waivers by the Yankees on April 3 and then claimed off waivers by the A's two days later.

Oakland designated Thompson for assignment on Tuesday after he was 1-for-7 in 3 games.

Thompson can play all three outfield positions and the Sox figure to give him the longest look in center. Current center fielder Adam Engel is batting .168 over 111 games since joining the White Sox from Class AAA Charlotte late last May.

Saladino was 2-for-8 in 6 games (3 starts) this season. He broke in with the Sox in 2015 and batted .231 in 246 games while dealing with ongoing back issues.
