White Sox acquire infield prospect Jose Rondon from Padres

Jose Rondon was a top prospect with the Los Angeles Angels, and he was a top prospect with the San Diego Padres.

Having failed to live up to his potential with both teams, Rondon will get his next shot with the Chicago White Sox.

On Wednesday, the Sox acquired the 23-year-old infielder in a trade from the Padres for cash considerations.

San Diego's No. 5 prospect heading into the 2016 season, Rondon is a career .290 hitter in seven years as a minor leaguer. His best position is shortstop.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder played in 8 games with San Diego in 2016 and was 3-for-25 (.120). The Padres designated Rondon for assignment on Saturday.

Last season, the right-handed hitter slashed .293/.347/.442 with 20 doubles, 7 home runs and 49 RBI in 78 games with Class AA San Antonio, AAA El Paso and the Arizona League Padres. Baseball America rated Rondon San Diego's No. 22 prospect heading into 2017.

Rondon signed with the Angels in 2011 as an international free agent out of Venezuela. He was voted California League Rookie of the Year in 2014 and played for the World Team at the All-Star Futures Game that season.

The addition of Rondon pushes the White Sox's 40-man roster to 40.

Openers set: The White Sox open the upcoming season at Kansas City on March 29. Starting times were announced on Wednesday and first pitch between the Sox and Royals is set for 3:15 p.m.

The White Sox's home opener is April 6 vs. Detroit. First pitch is 3:10 p.m.
