Sears Centre hosting Midlands

Wrestling fans are in for a treat at the Sears Centre Arena this weekend.

Four hundred of the best collegiate wrestlers will converge in Hoffman Estates on Friday and Saturday for the 57th Northwestern Midlands.

The event has been moved to the Sears Centre due to the remodeling of Welsh Ryan Arena in Evanston.

Sessions on Friday are at 9:30 a.m. with the quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

Saturday's semifinals will take place at noon with the final at 7 p.m.

Several former wrestlers from Daily Herald schools will be competing.

Tickets are available at Sears Centre box office or online.

Jim Cartwright, the longtime head wrestling coach at Conant and currently an assistant at Notre Dame in Niles, is serving as floor manager for the event.

Over the years his peers have recognized Cartwright for his many contributions and accomplishments. He was nominated six times as the IWCOA Coach of the Year and honored twice. In 1993, he was inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame.

At Conant, Cartwright won 425 dual meets, 21 Mid-Suburban League South Titles, 17 MSL championships and had an overall league record of 164-4-1. His teams qualified for the IHSA Finals four times, finishing second in 1996 and 2000.
