Sox fall to streaking Indians, but Lopez stands out

Wins and losses eventually are going to matter for the White Sox.

At this late stage of a rebuilding season, the Sox are more interested in developing young talent that can help them contend in the near future.

A young talent such as Reynaldo Lopez.

Taking the mound against the hottest team in baseball Wednesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, Lopez pitched over some shaky defensive backing and allowed 1 run on 6 hits in 6 hits.

It was Lopez's fourth start since joining the Sox from Class AAA Charlotte, and it was clearly his best.

"He did a great job," manager Rick Renteria said. "Even though his numbers were good, he did better than that. We should have caught the ball on a few plays and maybe he could have gone deeper."

The Indians defeated the White Sox 5-1, the defending American League champions extending their winning streak to 14 games.

For as good as Lopez was for the Sox, Carlos Carrasco was even better for Cleveland.

Facing only 28 hitters while going the distance, Carrasco had a shutout until Adam Engel homered with two outs in the ninth inning.

"Tip your cap to him," Renteria said of Carrasco. "He was really, really good. His ball had a lot of action."

Avisail Garcia had the first hit for the Sox, a single leading off the fifth inning. Carrasco got Nicky Delmonico to ground into a double play.

Kevan Smith led off the sixth with a single and was quickly erased when Tyler Saladino hit into a double play.

Storm watch:

The White Sox are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Irma, which is battering the Caribbean and heading toward Florida.

"There's probably a bunch of guys that have family down there," manager Rick Renteria said. "I know my wife's family, a lot of her family is in Puerto Rico. It keeps everything in perspective, all of the things that are going on, the things that just happened in Houston.

"We're all cognizant of the realities of life and the things that are really important. There are going to be a lot of people keeping track."

Sick bay:

Nick Delmonico was back in the White Sox's lineup Wednesday after missing 11 games with a sprained right wrist.

Yoan Moncada got the night off. The second baseman returned Tuesday after missing 10 games with a right- shin contusion and is being eased back into regular play.

Tim Anderson was under the weather Wednesday. He was a late scratch, and Tyler Saladino replaced him at shortstop.
