Part of Blackhawks camp will be in South Bend

The Chicago Blackhawks will open training camp in Chicago in just over two weeks, but they also will use Notre Dame's Compton Family Ice Arena to prepare for the 2017-18 season.

The Hawks will be in South Bend from Sept. 24-28, according to Mike McNeill, the arena's programming and instruction manager. The Hawks have a preseason game at Boston on Monday, Sept. 25, but McNeill said the team will fly back to South Bend and continue camp until Thursday, Sept. 28 (when they also have a preseason game at Detroit).

After that, the rest of camp will be in Chicago.

In years past the Hawks have held scrimmages in front of a packed house at Compton Family Ice Arena, but McNeill said scrimmages are not scheduled to be part of this year's camp in South Bend. He wasn't sure if practices would be open to the public.

The starting date of training camp has not been released, but the Hawks open the preseason at Columbus on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

The Hawks close the preseason at home against Boston on Saturday, Sept. 30, then begin the regular season at home against the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, Oct. 5.

Prospect Tournament:

Forwards Alex DeBrincat, Alexandre Fortin, David Kampf, Graham Knott, Anthony Louis and defenseman Luc Snuggerud are six of the 24 Hawks prospects who will play in the 2017 Prospect Tournament at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, Michigan from Sept. 8-12.

Prospects from seven other NHL franchises will take part in the tournament, with the first-place teams in each division playing a championship game Sept. 12.
