Schaumburg Boomers open road trip with 3-2 win

The Schaumburg Boomers opened a six-game road trip with a 3-2 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners on Tuesday night.

Schaumburg took a 1-0 lead in the first, stringing together three consecutive two-out singles. Opie Brodbeck put Schaumburg ahead with the third straight knock. Southern Illinois plated two runs in the third against starter Conrad Wozniak to take the only advantage of the night. The Boomers tied the game on a Kyle Ruchim sacrifice fly in the fifth and scored the deciding run on a solo homer from Zack Weigel leading off the sixth. Weigel owns six homers this year. Southern Illinois placed the tying run at second in the eighth and ninth but came up empty against the bullpen.

Wozniak worked 5.2 innings to earn his second consecutive win. The Texan allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Jake Joyce earned his ninth save of the season by spinning the ninth. Weigel tallied a pair of hits along with Sean Godfrey as the Boomers collected nine. Schaumburg has scored more runs through 60 games than the team did in all of 2016 and owns more homers than in both 2015 and 2016.

The Boomers (41-19), who continue to lead the East Division with the best record in the league, have won four consecutive contests. The trip continues with another 7:05 p.m. game against the Miners on Wednesday. RHP Michael Wood (1-1, 6.75) takes the ball for Schaumburg opposite RHP Corey Sessions (1-5, 4.70).
