Boomers slug to series win

JOLIET - The Schaumburg Boomers matched a franchise record for runs scored and banged out 7 extra-base hits in an 18-10 win over the Joliet Slammers to win the rubber game and take two-of-three on the road.

Joliet tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the first against Schaumburg starter Preston Jamison before the floodgates opened. David Harris and Seth Spivey notched back-to-back singles to start the second against former big leaguer Joe Ortiz. Sean Godfrey put the Boomers ahead with a 2-run double and Josh Gardiner added a 2-run double later in the frame. Joliet responded with 4 in the bottom of the inning to lead again before 3 in the third. Spivey, Godfrey and James Keller all drove home runs in the third.

Joliet evened the game again with 2 in the third before the Boomers plated 6 unanswered, including 5 in the fifth. Spivey nailed a grand slam in the seventh, the second slam of the year for the Boomers. Jamison worked 3 innings in a no-decision. Austin Kerr tossed 2.1 frames to pick up the victory. Six pitchers threw in the game.

Schaumburg posted a season high 19 hits as eight of the nine in the order collected at least 1 hit. All nine batters reached base. Spivey and Keller notched 4 hits each. The 4 hits for Keller marked a career high. Spivey drove home five along with Godfrey, who finished with 3 hits. The team has set or matched a franchise record four times in the first nine games of the season.
