Kluber bests Quintana as Indians blank White Sox 3-0

White Sox starting pitcher Jose Quintana is still not sharp, not that it really mattered in Friday night's outing against the Cleveland Indians.

Hampered by poor run support since sliding into the Sox's rotation in 2012, Quintana is back in familiar territory this season.

The White Sox lost to the Indians 3-0 at Guaranteed Rate Field, and Quintana has received 4 runs total in 4 starts.

"Like I say every time, that's not my job," Quintana said of his offensive backing. "I try to do the best I can on the mound. We have a long season so I'm not frustrated right now."

Quintana is 0-4 with a 6.17 ERA, so he's more concerned with his own performance at the moment. The 28-year-old lefty pitched 6 innings against Cleveland and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks to go with 6 strikeouts.

After Austin Jackson scored from third base on Quintana's wild pitch in the third inning, the Indians' Brandon Guyer hit a 2-run homer in the fourth.

"I tried to keep the ball in the park and they got me one time, that's it," Quintana said.

Quintana was matched up against Corey Kluber in the series opener, and the Indians' ace held the Sox to 3 singles while pitching the fourth complete game shutout of his career. "He threw very, very well," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said of Kluber. "We had a tough task ahead of us today and he did what he needed to do."

Injury report:

On the disabled list with a left biceps bursitis, starting pitcher Carlos Rodon is expected to check in with the Sox this weekend.

"Carlos is going to be in town Sunday, I believe, for a routine follow-up visit with our doctor just to see where he's at," general manager Rick Hahn said. "He does continue to progress but until we have him pitching in games and on a rehab assignment, it's impossible to give a time frame on when he might be back."

Center fielder Charlie Tilson, sidelined with a stress reaction in his right foot, is out of a walking boot but is being moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room for starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey, who is replacing James Shields.

"On Charlie, I would like him to feel like he's ready to go on Day 55," Hahn said. "But we are not going to rush him. We are going to take whatever time we need to get him right and taking the full 60 (days) is a perfectly rational pace at this point, given where he's at."

After Friday's loss to the Indians, the White Sox optioned catcher Kevan Smith to Class AAA Charlotte. Geovany Soto (elbow inflammation) is expected to be activated off the DL today.

Frazier returns:

After missing six of nine games on the White Sox's first road trip of the season, including the last four, third baseman Todd Frazier was flu-free and back in the lineup Friday night.

"Terrible," said Frazier, who had two bouts with he flu and lost 10 pounds. "Absolutely terrible. I couldn't feel my feet underneath me. I was just weak. I rushed back a little too quick and things happen. I'm glad to be OK now. I'm glad to be ready to go."off the DL today.
