Mattress fire damages Wheaton home

A juvenile playing with fire apparently ignited a mattress in a Wheaton house, authorities said Thursday.

Firefighters responded about 10 p.m. Wednesday to the reported structure fire on the 1400 block of Buena Vista Drive. When they arrived, they saw light smoke coming from the home.

Firefighters found the mattress ablaze in the basement and extinguished the flames within minutes, officials said. The fire caused minor damage to the room.

Authorities said everyone inside the house was evacuated. No injuries were reported, but one adult was taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield for a medical complication possibly triggered by the situation.

Investigators determined the blaze started accidentally, most likely the result of a juvenile occupant playing with fire.
