Body found on beach in Hghland Park could be missing Elgin swimmer

The body of a woman found Saturday on a beach in Highland Park could be an Elgin swimmer who went missing in Lake Michigan six days earlier, the Chicago Tribune is reporting.

Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said the body recovered could be Lena Lemesh, 52, who was lost while swimming with a cold-weather swimming group that disappeared Nov. 4, the Tribune is reporting.

"We believe it's all stemming from the incident in Highland Park a week ago." Cooper told the Tribune. "We believe we have (identified her), but we're going to look at everything when we do our autopsy and do our confirmations."

An autopsy for the woman is scheduled for Tuesday.

Rescuers suspended their search for Lemesh after she disappeared off a Highland Park beach while she and nine other members of a cold-water swimming group attempted to navigate what authorities described as dangerous conditions.

A second member of the group, Stanislaw Wlosek Jr., 46, of Itasca was pulled from the water unresponsive by emergency responders later Sunday and taken to Highland Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Preliminary autopsy results show he died as a result of drowning. The Lake County coroner's office and Highland Park Police Department are continuing to investigate Wlosek's death. Toxicology is pending.
