Barrington woman enshrined in Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame

Barrington resident Sam Oliver has garnered another well-deserved recognition for her efforts to improve the community.

Oliver, former executive director of Citizens for Conservation, recently was inducted into the Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame's Class of 2018. The award was presented by the Illinois Conservation Foundation.

Oliver received an award that recognizes "individuals with records of exemplary service in and commitments to improving conservation efforts and outdoor recreation opportunities in Illinois. She served as executive director of Lake Barrington-based Citizens for Conservation from 1984 to 2015.

"Sam Oliver is synonymous with conservation and volunteerism," wrote one person who nominated her for the statewide award.

Earlier this year, the nonprofit Barrington Area Development Commission gave a special award to Oliver for her long-standing community involvement.

Oliver, who moved to Barrington with her family in 1968, received the commission's Lifetime Volunteer Award. Recipient of the Citizen of the Year honor in 1978, Oliver has served the community in many ways beyond Citizens for Conservation, including on the board of Barrington United Methodist Church.
