Wheaton ready for U.S. Senior Women's Open trafffic

Wheaton officials say they are excited to welcome the inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open and plan to do so this week with little to no interruptions to city operations.

Spokeswoman Arin Thrower said the USGA has contracted out most public safety and security aspects for the four-day tournament, keeping the strain off the city's fire and police departments.

"It's an honor for Wheaton to serve as the host city for the first U.S. Senior Women's Open," Thrower said. "Some of the greatest names in women's golf will be competing in this tournament and we welcome these awesome athletes and their families to Wheaton and to the historic Chicago Golf Club."

The club is preparing to host more than 5,000 spectators on each day of the weekend and more than 800 volunteers will make it all happen. USGA officials said they wouldn't provide attendance estimates for an inaugural championship.

The USGA has hired a private EMS provider and Wheaton paramedics will be providing transport off-site to area hospitals if needed.

Off-duty Wheaton police officers hired by the USGA will be directing traffic at intersections around Chicago Golf Club at Hawthorne Lane and Merrill Drive, the Plamondon Road entrance and the bus entrance to the course off Warrenville Road.

Player practice rounds will not be open to the public. The first round gets underway 7 a.m. Thursday.

There will be no on-site general parking. Fans can park for free at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 Manchester Road, and take complimentary shuttle buses, starting at 6:30 a.m.

For patrons with mobility issues, scooters will be available at Chicago Golf on on a first-come, first-served basis.
