Schaumburg Township installing new electronic message sign, expanding parking lot

Schaumburg Township will install a $47,000 electronic message sign this summer to replace the existing street sign at its administration building at 1 Illinois Blvd. in Hoffman Estates.

The main purpose of the upgrade is to provide more up-to-date information to pedestrians and motorists at the intersection of Schaumburg Road and Illinois Boulevard, without the need to manually change messages, Schaumburg Township Supervisor Mary Wroblewski said.

The sign won't be used for any commercial advertising, officials say.

Hoffman Estates officials approved the 8-foot-tall, 66-square-foot sign, which will have a brick base and a 28-square-foot LED message board on both sides.

The sign, designed by Schaumburg-based Q.T. Signs, will be similar in size and exactly as tall as the one it's replacing. Installation is expected to take about eight weeks, Wroblewski said.

Another project at the township's headquarters that's still in progress and awaiting government approval is the expansion of the parking lot to accommodate about 50 more vehicles, she said.

With the large number of seniors who use the township building, officials are interested in cutting down the likelihood of visitors having to park across the street, Wroblewski said.

"It's going to be beneficial for everyone," she added.

Engineering of the expansion has cost the township $450,000 and the project is expected to be complete by the end of the year, Wroblewski said.

The expansion also will cause a baseball diamond the park district isn't using to be moved farther away from the township building, she said.
